Last year I started a restoration of a 54 Shasta 1500 and tried to log what was done on a daily basis. This winter I picked up a 58 Shasta Airflyte and pulled it from Idaho to Minnesota. Well this weekend was the first time I didn't have snow in my front yard and thought I may be able to get the camper into the garage. So here is my progress so far: Sunday - Cleaned the garage and got the camper moved in front of the garage door. Monday Night - Since I need to take the axle off to get it in the garage I need to start take parts off the bottom. First things first, jacked the camper up. Then I took the floor heater out. Got the old wiring off the bottom of the trailer. Then the hard part. Got the pins off the leaf spring bolts. Being, I am out of shape that seemed to be enough for one night. I got up and down and under the camper at least 25 times to get tools and move the jack stands around. Well, I will try and log my progress and post pictures everyday like I did last year. 20180422_180300 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Today was a good day, I got the axle off in about an hour. The right air tools make all the difference. The next trick was to get the camper to the ground. That took about 30 min with the jack and slowly lowering it by adjusting jack stands and a pry bar. Now I need to find about 10 big guys to push it into the garage. 20180424_191824 by Tom Ress, on Flickr 20180424_191843 by Tom Ress, on Flickr 20180424_191923 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Is it sitting on car dollies or something? My daughter wants our '60 Airflyte after I get it restored, but that won't happen at least until the year 2020.

It is sitting on some 1x6 boards until I get it into the garage then I will put it on dollys. I have 1 inch to spare to get the camper in the door.

Tonight, How to get the camper into the garage all by myself with no axle and not dolly wheels under it to roll. It had to be drug. Well, I always tell my wife if women don't find you handsome they should find you handy. (But then my wife says, Well he is handy) I proved it to myself one more time I was handy. Used a come along to get the camper in place so I could then push it in. Used the trailer hitch as my anchor for the come along. Now how to push a 1800 lb trailer into a garage all by myself. It is easy. Back the SUV up to it, hook a log chain around the tongue and back the SUV up and before long the camper is in the garage and ready to be put on dollies. That seemed like enough for one night. (By the way you need to take the top vent off as well or you will not make it. I had about 1/4 inch to spare on the side walls. ) However said you can't fit 10lbs in a 5lb bag hasn't met me. 20180425_190642 by Tom Ress, on Flickr 20180425_192442 by Tom Ress, on Flickr 20180425_204822 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Thursday night progress.
Being I have a really nice 54 rebuilt Shasta to use I spent the night tracking down the gas leak. It was valve connection. Got it fixed. So I guess I didn't get anything done to the 58.

I cant believe you got that in your garage in one piece, thats great. I am jealous that you have an inside work space. My garage is a hybrid garage lol It is original to my 1919 house which originally had a tall garage door but then in the 50's added 3' on to the front and now it has a normal door that cant be raised and the door sits down into the opening a few inches when open. I dream about ripping off the front sometimes. Cant wait to watch your progress

You have a garage; I'm jealous. Um, for some reason this word "save" keeps getting tagged onto the end of my reply. It will likely be right here --> Save

Got some work done today: Got the camper turned around in the garage so I could open the garage door. Removed the door, a few windows and an access door. I also got some of the j rail removed. 20180428_203948 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Sunday and you think I would get some good progress. Nope, drove my wife 2.5 hours one way to a bridal shower. But I did get to stop and see a fellow trailer builder and all of his projects. I loved his shop and all the land on the lake. If I really want to do more of this I need to get land and big shop. Will try to get something done tomorrow.

Monday progress, Got home from work and to make my wife happy I trimmed the trees that I didn't do for the last 3 years. Now I should be able to do some work on the camper. Got the rest of the windows out. The corner windows are a pain. I hope I can have the skins off in a couple of days. 20180430_203748 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Kathy I put a 3/4 inch thick piece of plywood under the sink glued to the wheel well and then mounted it there. I also added a heat shield over the top to help with the heat coming off of it even though the sink would also take some of the heat also the shield was to help from dropping something down inside of it. It is just a bent piece of aluminum at kind of a upside down j shape. So far I really like it. It heats up fast and get the job done when washing dishes or your hands. I also used it once with the shower head. Here is photo before I put the heat shield on at the top. 20170818_195232 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Tuesdays progress report: Had my son and future wife out for dinner so got a late start. Got the front bottom skin off under the window. As you can see the rot isn't very bad. This is normally gone on most campers this age. I am hopeful that the rest isn't to bad. Street side looks really good 20180501_204400 by Tom Ress, on Flickr Curb side isn't bad 20180501_204324 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

It is time for my nightly report. Worked a couple hours removing screws and nails which allowed me to remove more side skins a back skin and half the roof. Now all I have is one side left and the camper will have no skin. I am still very happy with the what I am finding under the camper. Very little rot. I hope this one is an easy fix and some tlc inside and I am back on the road in no time. Will do some of the following though while the skin is off: - New fuse box - 12volt and 110 volt - plumbing - safety items like co2, smoke and gas detector - I think I will buy the aftermarket replacement side windows - If I have a water tank I will put in a pump - gray water tank - insulate with hard board pink stuff - tyvek it I am sure I will find other things to do as I go. Here are a few pictures for your viewing enjoyment. 20180502_202135 by Tom Ress, on Flickr 20180502_192357 by Tom Ress, on Flickr 20180502_184711 by Tom Ress, on Flickr
