Today I got more stuff ready. The 54 needed to be checked out again before we go camping. Good thing, I had a water leak. Once I got the fitting right it sealed right up. I broke the air line on the ceiling to the compressor and hose real so got the fixed. I hope tomorrow I get some real work done on the 58.
So I have a question. This camper has a gaucho and we want to just use it as a bed. When I measure it shows 51 inches between the wall and wheel well. A full size is 52 inches. Is anyone putting a full size bed in this location without taking the gaucho apart? Will a full size bed fit?

Can't you just extend the gaucho as a bed and anchor it? I can't see how 1" is going to make a difference? I don't think a full size mattress will fit, if that's what you're asking. It's pretty easy to get one made to fit. If you use foam, it will squish to fit...
Tell us more.

Today I did get some work done. I straightened some of the aluminum and then worked on the boards across the roof by the vent. I think I will need to put a metal bar to mate to the boards. I put boards in with a warp that went up and the warp was so bad on ceiling boards it pulled it down. You can see from the picture that there is some warp in the ceiling. 20180513_193041 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

Got some work done today. Went and got some flat steel 3/4 in stock and then mated it to the 1x3 boards that go on either side of the vent. The old board had quite a sag and the new board when replaced still got pulled down so I needed to stiffen them even more. Really stiffened the roof up a lot. Will have to do that on a couple more ceiling boards is my guess. You can see the metal screwed to the side of the board and another one on the board by the drill but you can't see that. 20180514_200117 by Tom Ress, on Flickr

It looks like the board still dips down...is that an optical illusion from camera angles or something?
I don't know where, but I do remember seeing pics of a rebuild somewhere that used 3/4" square aluminum tubing fastened to the rafters the same as you did yours with the flat steel. They also put a slight crown in the aluminum tubing to help protect against further sagging.

Well now the question is does the ceiling still set down tight on top of the floor to ceiling cabinet? I've seen where this can be a problem and the only thing I can think of is that the manufacturer installed the walls a bit too high on the chassis boards. Just a thought.

I did have a corner of the cabinet and closet have a gap but I put a new screw in the corners and it pulled it back down. There still is a bit of a dip but it is almost gone now that I added the flat steel. I will also need to build up around the vent and that should help but I also plan to put new rafter boards across the whole camper and I hope that helps as well.
Today I got and will get nothing done and tomorrow doesn't look much better since I have a meeting and the next night doesn't look good either since like many of you I want to go camping in the 54 and that will take time away from working on the 58. Progress is slow but I am not in to big of a hurry. Need to remember important things in life like my sons wedding or memorial day weekend and then my daughter called this weekend and told us she is now engaged and we had to go see her tonight.

I've tried a lot of aluminum and it helped a little, but not much. Angle iron works but makes it hard to anchor things. The metal has to go "up", so must be padded at the aluminum roof metal. One thing that works pretty well is Reflectix bubble insulation over each rafter. It will add to the height, so take a long look at sizing and existing metal.Another possible solution would be duct tape between the metals, less added height.

I'm curious, how are you going to get the camper out of the shop once it's finished and how so you get it the camper high enough to get the axle back in place without damaging anything? Danny

I'm curious, how are you going to get the camper out of the shop once it's finished and how so you get it the camper high enough to get the axle back in place without damaging anything? Danny I have been camper with the 54 so been gone a few days. It was great to go camping again after a long winter. To answer you question what I do is get it to the floor on the angle iron and hook a log chain to the tongue and drag it out. Once on the rough driveway cement I put a couple 1x6 boards under it and then keep dragging. It should have about 1/2 inch to spare on the roof and garage door cross member. I have to leave the vent off but one I get it out I put the vent on. To get it off the ground I use a pry bar to get it started and then work my way up until I can get my low profile car jack under it and then I am good to go. I will then do my work under the camper in the driveway when the top half is all buttoned up and it will not get wet inside. It takes longer to work under this way but I don't have the width because of the junk hanging down or height in the garage to do much else. Maybe I can leave the garage door down and put it on jack stands in the garage if I get all the stars aligned right. To get it off the ground I may use a johnson bar that a friend has let me use before but a long pry bar and a block of wood has done it before for me.

I tried to get my 56 Shasta project in the shop but having conventional garage doors I had the same problem,I removed the vent and pulled the rims and needed a couple of more inches.
I guess removing the axle is the next step.
Had I know I would get involved with vintage camper I would have installed taller doors. Danny

I think progress this week is going to be zero. With my son getting married Saturday I think I will be working on those items. Maybe Monday I can get to it again.

I did make a bit of progress last night. I got the cabinet doors off and the bench frames. I also took the stove out and found that at one point were the screws were attached through the bottom of the oven to the shelf there was burning going on. See picture below. I also found a new job that I can retire on. See the orange match box that I found that had fallen behind the stove. 20180523_194403 by Tom Ress, on Flickr Got the classic feet in picture!!!!! 20180523_200033 by Tom Ress, on Flickr Found a reference to Mason shoes advert like this in a Popular Mechanic magazine from 1956.
