Sorry novrmyhed I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I thought I was posting my above reply to the "what you did today thread". Looks like quite a ordeal to get the title.. but at least when you are done you will have a clear title, and not just a tag. It works a little bit different here in GA, but you don't have to have a title, so they don't go though all that. Brian

I'm still chugging away at hanging projects around the house that must be finished before the Shasta starts. But in my searching for tile supplies for the house, at Lowe's, I did find a box of Armstrong VCT for 2.50 . There are a couple tiles missing, and a couple damages, but for that price I figured we could make it work. We are planning on a blue based paint scheme, and these are light gray (pewter is the color I think) so they should go well with a dark blue tile.

Also. If you end up at Anasatsia ever. The Racoons are BAD. They are no joke. Stole $20+ of meat & cheese and left our cooler open. Never stayed in a park with Racoons as active as they are. Yeah, they have no problem at all with opening a cooler. Smart little rascals they are.

but do you have any tips for us using the .040? Will cutting out notches as we fold over be enough? I wonder if getting such heavy skin smooth at the fold over will be impossible with the block and mallet system. My understanding is the truck skin providers can't do the locks and bottom edge. Is that what you're finding? I did a fold over on the front edge of my teardrop with. 040 and it was a bear. [/IMG] I used wider trim that I made, but it was difficult to get a sharp fold. It worked, but it weren't easy. Brian

I did something very similar to make a AC vent cover for my teardrop, and I was amazed at how well it turned out. It's amazing what this can do with a few scraps around the house.
Great work! Brian

Long story short, watch every single restoration video on YouTube by Mobiltec. They are outstanding, and will probably answer many of your questions.
Congratulations and like they say, "photos or it didn't happen".

We were there as well (we live about 30 minutes away). Had a great time checking out all of the 70+ campers that were there. I'm already looking forward to it next year. We got some great "inspiration" to get things going on the shasta.
PS. Jekyll campground is not a KOA. BUT It is very nice, and the location is prime! Having said that, if you come in the summer be prepared for the heat. The trees seem nice, but they create a dead zone in the normally breezy area. July and August and you will COOK!

Mine is a 62, and there is a plate on the inner, road side of the tongue. It's obvious (at least on mine). It was completely covered in rust. I put a wire wheel on the drill and hit it with that and it brought it right out.

SusieQ I know this is an old thread... but I did a little searching before I created a new post. Did you end up ordering from Hood, or using the 1/4 inch on the sides? I have a source for 1/8 bending on the top... but I think it might be a little too flimsy for the sides (it's not as stout as true 1/8). My local Home Depot has 1/4 (really 3/16)... so I was thinking of using that to replace my ends side pieces, and my vent piece in the roof.... .and using the 1/8 on the end curves. Thanks, Brian I ended up using 1/4" for my ceiling and back panel. I kerfed it to get it to bend. But when I measured the thickness on the existing side panels on my trailer, they actually measured 3/16. I kept most of my original side panels. Sounds good.. Yeah, I think mine are between 1/8 and 3/16th... and I can easily get 3/16 birch that looks good (made in the US). The 1/8 bending board that i ordered from HD seems to look good, and holds up with a couple coats of shellac... but I want a little more strength in the side wall ends that I'm replacing. Thanks for the help. Brian

Source for 1/8 Birch plywood, Hood Distribution. Fourteen locations: Hattiesburg MS; Mobile, Al; Memphis, TN; Nashville, TN; Ayer, MA; Delray Beach, FL; Highpoint, NC; Jacksonville, FL; Manchester, CT; Milton, VT; Orlando, FL; Raleigh, NC; Greenville, SC; Tucson, AZ These are all stocking warehouses. The plywood is all American made. They also stock some foreign manufactured but the color, grain and quality is not as nice. The price as I recall is about $18.50 a 4x8 sheet here in Tucson. THANKS! Came through Mobile last week I will be going to Hattiesburg, MS in a few days. I may have to rent a trailer to take some home. Can you buy it directly from the warehouse? I'm about to go a googling. I do not see Hattiesburg, MS listed. Found it and added it to links: www.hooddistribution.com/ SusieQ I know this is an old thread... but I did a little searching before I created a new post. I haven't used a transfer switch, but we do have the PD4045. We have it wired so that the battery is completely off of the converter. I just like towing knowing... hey that rhymes... that we are completely disconnected.
As I recall the battery in of ours is wired slightly different than the wiring diagram from PD, to allow this to happen... but it's been a while, so I might be wrong. I either case, yes, I like having the disconnect. We used a blue sea manual switch, cost about 30 bucks.

So far, so good. Let us know how it turns out with multiple coats of shellac. Thinking delamination might be an issue?

Alright. So, my order from Home Depot finally came in (after i called to check on it). My order was for 1 sheet of this stuff. It's (almost) and 1/8" thick and is their "radius" bending board. It's a 2 rotary cut birch veneer with a wood core/back. They sell this in 4x8 (what I bought) and 8x4. The grain and bending is the opposite on the 8x4. I figured this would be very flexible so that it would roll into a short post (vs a tall, 8ft column). You can see in the last photo that it is stout across the grain, so as to roll around the back window area. It defintely has much more structural support this way, than with the grain. This looks like it will work exactly like I was hoping, counter intuitive to what it is supposed to be bent (short ways). Long ways, this stuff REALLY wants to bend, it folds over itself when you pick it up. The grain is definitely stout. I *think* it will work, and will be a descent match for my 62 interior, although with more character. It reseambles what others have referred to as a "flame birch". The lighter parts of the wood, in between the flames, look a little yellow. I'm not sure if this will blend in or not when I put the shellac on it... looking for other's expertise here? Thoughts, concerns, experience here.. please tell me. I'm new to this stuff. I feel pretty good about this, but I need to shellac it and see how that turns out. This was 27 bucks and was special order. I will post that info later when I can find it. I got to itching too bad to see how the amber shellac would look, even though I don't need this for a while. It's a key part of my rebuild, and seemingly very difficult to get, so I have been thinking about it quite a bit. SO.. I fetched amber shellac, and denatured alcohol. Here is my piece, about 1/3 of it has shellac on it, and it did what I hoped it would. You can see on the left, there were some uneven spots in the light parts of the wood. Some where lighter tan, the others were a yellowish. The lighter areas look even now, and the flame areas of the birch seem to blend nicely. I think another coat or 2 and it will match whats inside my shasta.. I think i am going to go ahead with this. Special order from Home Depot.. 27 bucks. 1 coat of amber shellac by gunguy05, on Flickr
