Hey, I just saw your post about this. I am calling Home Depot today to find out, again, if my special order of the 1/8 inch Birch has come in yet. I called last Friday and the order still had not been received into the store yet. I am hopeful it will get here this week. I have looked at that panel above that you have listed in the link above, they had that at our Depot Depot in stock. I don't think it is what you want, it would work, but the grain is really ugly on it. I will post back once I get the info on the stuff that I special-ordered at Home Depot. I just was wondering if you received your plywood? how does it look? How much a sheet? I am about in the same spot you are. I just picked up a 1961 Layton last week and I need to do the same thing to it and and new to all this. Thanks Dave Up above is a link to my post on the other thread. Overall pretty good. Has a lot of grain, I bought some Amber shellac , I just haven't had time to put any one the piece to see how it compares. Maybe but the first of next week.

Hey! I was looking at your shasta pics (we have a 62 as well) and wondering about your stove. What kind of paint did you use, and how is holding up? Thinking about what I'm going to do with ours.
BTW.. it turned out great!
Thanks, Brian

Gunguy, glad your order finally arrived, and in good shape! That is always a concern, you wait and wait for a special order and it either arrives damaged, or you find you have received stuff that people who could pick and choose off the shelf have rejected. My boyfriend is headed down to San Diego today to work, and is going to check out Frost Hardwood, who patiently responded to my emails yesterday, and The Hardwood & Hardware Co, who have bendable poplar. Maybe one of them also have bendalbe birch. I do want him to take a look at your post before he takes off. I'm off on a trip this weekend, but I'm going to try and get some shellac asap and give it a coat, or 2, and see how close in tone I can get it to the stuff in the trailer. I will make a video and post it to my youtube channel as soon as I get that done. I googled this stuff and there is nothing out there showing anything about it, other than the manufacturer info. The great thing about it is, if it work, it can be ordered 1 sheet or 100 sheets at your local Home Depot... no shipping. Good luck with your search as well.

That was pretty smart to purchase the opposite bend than what you needed...looks like it will work well. With that amount of color, I wonder if you shouldn't start with clear shellac, then tint it a bit after a few coats, if needed. I'm a little worried about the structural integrity of it on the side walls (at the ends), but then again I worry about everything. I know it's the sum of the parts, but when I compare it to the scraps of luan that I have, it's like a wet noodle in the long direction. I hadn't thought about doing the shellac that way. I was thinking stain (with the amber shellac) and then clear..... (I've used stain and spar varnish on my teardrop) But I guess the denatured alcohol will intermingle the two once applied?

Alright. So, my order from Home Depot finally came in (after i called to check on it). My order was for 1 sheet of this stuff. It's (almost) and 1/8" thick and is their "radius" bending board. It's a 2 rotary cut birch veneer with a wood core/back. They sell this in 4x8 (what I bought) and 8x4. The grain and bending is the opposite on the 8x4. I figured this would be very flexible so that it would roll into a short post (vs a tall, 8ft column). You can see in the last photo that it is stout across the grain, so as to roll around the back window area. It defintely has much more structural support this way, than with the grain. This looks like it will work exactly like I was hoping, counter intuitive to what it is supposed to be bent (short ways). Long ways, this stuff REALLY wants to bend, it folds over itself when you pick it up. The grain is definitely stout. I *think* it will work, and will be a descent match for my 62 interior, although with more character. It reseambles what others have referred to as a "flame birch". The lighter parts of the wood, in between the flames, look a little yellow. I'm not sure if this will blend in or not when I put the shellac on it... looking for other's expertise here? Thoughts, concerns, experience here.. please tell me. I'm new to this stuff. I feel pretty good about this, but I need to shellac it and see how that turns out. This was 27 bucks and was special order. I will post that info later when I can find it. Please... tell me more about this. I called Hood in Jacksonville (About an hour south of me). They told me first of all, that they could order a 300 minimum for me, even thought I wasn't a tradesperson, then they told me that they didn't have birch in the 1/8 inch. How much is it from them up your way... there is another person down my way lookin for some, I might make a trip to NC if it's worth it. Hood said no twice before I got somebody willing to make some effort. He called around and found a mill willing to make 1/8 birch in SC but only if I took 20 pieces sight-unseen. I ended up with around 15 perfect and 5 with knots. Not of the knotted piece I was about to use strategically. $45 a sheet. Around $900 for the lot. Knots were big: These sheets really were beautiful, but unique: I would copy this and bring it to Hood in person: It basically tells them which mill to call. This will be a backup plan for me if the Columbia forest products order falls through. I called Friday an it hadn't come in yet. It was only 27 a sheet with no minimum. So.... Jus waiting now. Thanks for the info! Brian

The birch problems seems to have reached the west coast in force. I may order 20 more sheets milled from Hood in Raleigh just to have it on hand. The problem I have with storing it in the south is mildew. Please... tell me more about this. I called Hood in Jacksonville (About an hour south of me). I've done it on almost every trailer I have worked on. I was actually thinking about this while watching one of your videos the other night. Is there a preferred light that you use that will retro fit easily into a 11) socket, that's 12V, or is there an easy way to do this without modifying the vintage light too much (at least visually) I would like to make all of my 110 lights in my build 12V LED if possible... even the Gas lamp (I think).

I actually like it better than Ash. I'm thinking I may do a whole trailer in Oak. We did *most* of the inside of the teardrop with oak. LOoking back, i wish we had done the ceiling too. We used engineered hardwood flooring material on the side walls, and 1/4.. yes 1/4 inch (it was a %&$* to bend, but I made it work). on the front curves. I was really happy with the look once it was covered with spar varnish. This is right before we had everything buttoned up. 20150101_180743 by gunguy05, on Flickr

The results of the hunt for 4x8 sheets is grim. I emailed all of the places in So California that were mentioned in this thread, and so far none of them carry it. John from Weber Plywood suggested Austin's in Santa Ana, who I have not heard back fom yet. That is the last one. John was also very forthcoming about the situation in his reply to me, he added, "There is nothing on the market right now that is truly "Baltic" or Russian Birch. Even though the Chinese begin with the same product as the Russians because they steal it from Russian forests, their laminating skills are next to none and we've found it delaminating on delivery." Well, that is discouraging. I hope gunguy05 comes back with good news. Right now, I am ready to look for an alternative to birch. I am not trying for 100% authenticity on my trailer project, I just like the look of shellacked or varnished wood, as opposed to painting it. My rehabilitator is ready to start on the floor and frame, and having some at the ready would be nice. I am anxiously awaiting a call from HD to tell me that my order is in.... I am hopeful..

I have decided that oak is the best match for missing ash. I'm going to take a few photos tomorrow of something I just finished and you tell me.... More to come tomorrow.... OK here it is. I built this bathroom door for the 59 Kenskill. I had to mill the lumber myself because I couldn't find any stock the right thickness. The paneling is Oak... 3 coats of amber using french polish method and two coats of clear. The rest of the trailer is Ash... What do you think of the match? I think it's better than Birch. By the way I found that door handle in a 51 Royal Spartanette that was abandoned in an old mining camp way out in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Been hanging on to it ever since and figured this was the perfect place for it. That's a working, latching and locking handle. Looks like it was made for the trailer to me! Great workmanship! Brian

There are several metal supply places in Jacksonville, FL which is 30 + miles for me and freight trucks will not deliver to my place - too risky for the rigs. So I want to source close enough so I can pick it up with my hauling trailer. So it sounds like the .24 might be too light and the .32 might be the way to go. All this detail information is good because I want to do a good job that will hold up. I have found a fabricator shop to do the seams and breaks and will be taking a test piece of aluminum to make sure it comes out right before we do all the pieces. Thanks everyone! Wondering if you might be willing to share your sources in Jax. I'm up in Brunswick, but will drive for the right price. I'm going to need at least 1 piece, with breaks, for the front of my 62. Thanks, Brian

Great pick for a project! I'm working on a 59 on and off when I get time and it is almost an exact duplicate of your 62. They sure didn't change much in those three years. I put a new Dometic in up high so it's easier to get to. No microwave. I have some videos of the refrigerator install on the website in case you are interested. I need to make the final one next time I'm working on it. Love that Tear and welcome to the forum. Thank you Larry. We haven't decided what we're going to do there yet. I think that I might move the refrigerator either up or down, and put in a air conditioner. It just depends on how I can get the vents to line up and everything with the existing outside holes. We live in Georgia, so an air conditioner is necessary with us and the two kids. That's my first off, my second option would be to put the air conditioner under the Gaucho in the back, and then it downward. I will check out those videos when I get a chance. Thanks for all the work you put it in those, they have been very helpful this far.
