It's probably been 5 to 10 years at least. Are you referring to the butyl tape that goes behind it?

I'd assume you'd use a pad on a drill or dremel and polishing compound.

It was a good rant! I'd prefer to not remove them at this point so my goal is to polish, tape the parts off and then paint the trailer. Probably in late May or June for the paint. It is only latex paint on the rails if that makes a difference!

Problem with doing new rail is it's a '66 compact which has sharp turns and not the graceful round ones.

My J channel gutters are more than salvageable and I'm wondering what the best way to remove the paint and polish them is? I tried a wire wheel in a small section and questioned the results a little bit.
Thoughts or experiences?
Thanks, Ben

Any thoughts on what you'll use? I'd like to reattach my wings but in a better manner than they were before.

Did you have any kind of spacer to keep them off the body so they don't ride on the j-channel?

Interesting. The metal on the inside of our wings is textured and not like your. The edges had some weird tape on them too.

So here's what happened. The hole was roughly 1 inch. I ended up getting some roof flashing aluminum, Geocell Ultima, and rivets. I took a wire wheel to the area after removing the antenna itself and cut a patch about 5x5. I then spread the Ultima on the back of the patch, put it in place and drilled 1/8th inch holes about every 3/4" around the outside and two holes on either side of the antenna hole. I then used 1/8" x 1/8" aluminum rivets and dipped them in the Ultima and pop riveted the patch in place.
Where I took the wings off to restore, I used 3/4" screws for temporary plugs. All other holes got JB Waterweld in them. This included the bolt holes from that stupid awning which was not installed correctly and came off after undoing three nuts on the inside of the camper. Lo and Behold the camper was originally baby poo brown! I then used a bleach cleaner to kill the algae/moss/mildew that was growing where the awning was and got it cleaned up.
The big bonus of the day was when I looked up and there it was, a C channel! We grabbed the one we bought on Ebay and test fit it to the channel and it worked great. Fit in perfectly and it's the right length. All in all not a bad day. Beth did wipe down the inside of the camper with a bleach cleaner to help prevent mold and the fans are still running to help dry things out. I'm hoping for some dry time next weekend to potentially put another coat of that nappy silver roof paint on.

Welcome Sean! Navy Vet here, so thanks, Brother. The Lads and Lassies on this site are incredible and will help get that beauty in tip top shape!

For simplicity sake what is the easiest way to charge my camper battery at the campground that has no electric and NO GENERATORS? Simply charging it off the car. The battery is powering one outlet and the roof vent fan.

So the little black stick on the right is the antenna. The RV awning is coming off this weekend and being replaced with C-channel for the awning we have. It's a tiny antenna that's why I'm confused about having to apply patches and such.

dochalpin,
Did you have any sort of tape over the edges of your wings? What do you plan on sealing the wings with?

When it comes to water any thing is possible. A lot of it depends on the angle the trailer, but water basically runs down hill by the path of least resistance. BigBill the hole is the size of an antenna cable (like coaxial). Why wouldn't I just use some JB Waterweld to fill the holes?

Is it possible for the leak at the antenna (halfway up on the door side on the roof) to have water make it all the way to the back of the trailer? Would it run down the aluminum?
