How about a light abrasive blasting, perhaps soda blasting? You'd be left with a matte finish that would oxidize quickly.

We sold Big Sis, our '63 Airflyte today. I've had a good time here and interacted with many really great people. Without a trailer I won't be hanging around here much.
I'd like to thank everyone for all the help and encouragement over the years. There are too many of you to name. But thanks anyway, to all.

I concur with Theresa. In my (unmolested) '63, those are drawers.

I’m on day 12 of quarantine ... ... and my dog said to me "now you know why I chew the furniture"

Thank you! My favorite paint in a spray can is Rustoleum Professional. It lays out really nicely.

Here's what I have. Note - that's the original vent! On the outside, the hole begins 14" from the edge. On the inside, the hole is 2" from the front of the cabinet and 3.5 inches from the right edge of the cabinet. Those dimensions are probably much more accurate than anything the Shasta factory was doing.

My '63 Airflyte is in the garage, easy to get to. Do you want measurements from the outside or the inside?

Pull the axle and put it on the dollies and then you can push it in. This is how we got our Shasta Compact in under a 7' garage door. We pulled it in with a come-a-long. Our next house has an 8' door.

Having just gone over my working Astral, perhaps I can be of help.
You press the red button and light the gas at the "zip tube" - the tube with many holes in it. The flame travels to the back of the fridge and lights the main burner. After the burner gets hot enough, a temperature activated valve at the base of the main burner opens! Then you release the red button and the zip tube goes out. That's correct behavior.
The hard part is determining if the main burner stayed lit. It's almost impossible to see. There is a mirror at the back that you can see from the front that's supposed to show you. It's almost impossible to see the main burner flame with that mirror, you have to be aligned just right. And if you've never seen it, it's even harder. It will be easier to see the first time if you do this when it's dark. Other ways to investigate are:
1) open the vent door on the outside of the trailer. Have your assistant stick their ear in there and listen for the click while you hold the red button
2) when you think it's lit (you've held the red button for 60+ seconds, or assistant has heard the click) touch the shield that's around the main burner and see if it's warm and if it remains warm.
3) there are 4 tiny screws that hold that shield in place - you have to remove the two on the left side and loosen the two on the bottom. Then you can finally see the burner and determine if it's burning or not. Be forewarned - you may have to pull the fridge out to put the screws back in.
Good luck! If I remember correctly, the fridge is too wide to get out through the camper door.

Hi all! It's been a while since I've been to these parts. Big Sis ('63 Airflyte) still lives in my garage - we're finally getting around to doing the few things we wanted to do to it. We fired up the (original) propane fridge last week and made ice cubes! Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and let you know we're still at it. Here's a link to my original post about Big Sis: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/1355/followed-home

I'm not ignoring you either - but I'm 900 miles away from home and my Airflyte. It will be a week before I'm home to measure it. Hopefully you're already on your way. Good luck!
