I asked my husband for Thetford Portable Toilet for my birthday, but I got this for my trailer instead I think not giving your wife a toilet for her birthday is one of those things men learn the hard way, and once learned they'll never make that mistake again ...

Our camper is a hobby. Working on it is as much fun as anything, and we like the satisfaction of figuring out a problem and then fixing it - The trailer seems to supply problems on a regular basis. When it's ready, we'll take it camping, to a rally maybe, but we've already got #2 in the wings so we have something to work on!
We also travel/camp in a '95 VW Eurovan Camper. It's less of a project, but requires plenty of maintenance. For example, it's time to change the timing belt/water pump. We rebuilt the AC last summer.
When we want to do serious camping, it's packs on our backs and into the mountains!

I have some left over formica from making the counter and table tops, I'm going to make a sink cover that drops in roughly flush. I'll let you know how it goes. That's way down the priority list, so it will be a while.

Thanks for posting the photos. It appears a little shorter. I'm 6 feet tall. Is that an issue with the compact? I'm 6' tall, and we have a first-gen Compact ('64). I just went out to it barefoot. I've got about 1/2" of clearance in a line from the door to the closet. I bump the LED lamp we installed. I'll bump the handle on the vent once we install it. I have plenty of room in our '63 Airflyte - it's several inches taller. Alas, also heavier, 3' longer, and a little wider.

"HERE COMES THE COUNTY SHERRIFF Here's my officer story. We were ~20 miles from leaving Illinois with the new to us Airflyte. On an almost deserted 4 lane divided highway, going below the speed limit, when a police car pulls up next to us and gives us a good looking over. Then his lights came on and we pulled over. "Know why I stopped you?" "No sir" "Expired registration" Sure enough, the trailer registration expired at the end of December, it was now January. We explained the situation, we'd just bought it, we'd even had a police officer come to the house when we bought it, to do a VIN inspection, and he'd looked at the title, the VIN, the license plate. Then he starts asking us more interesting questions. "You're from New Mexico?" "You came all the way here to buy this trailer?" "How old is it?" We asked him if he wanted to see inside. He started to realize he wasn't dealing with fully rational people. He was quite interested in the trailer. He explained to us that there was an exemption in Illinois for an expired trailer registration, that you were allowed to tow it once, either to the MVD or to your home, to get it registered. We said "we're towing it home!" and he sent us on our way. I have no idea if that's a real exemption or not.

Yes, thanks! My leftover fixtures are going to a trailer in Missouri! They left on their voyage yesterday morning.

Thanks Vikx. The lighting in the Compact had been hacked at by a previous owner - we weren't sure if these were original or not. It's not an "as new" restoration so we've done something else instead of using these.
The fixtures have been spoken for.

These fixtures were in my '64 Compact, one over the sink, the other over the rear window. Are they original? One has a broken electrical outlet. No globes. They're not going back in - if they're original, someone can have them for the price of shipping or they'll go to a swap table at a rally. If they're not original they're going in the trash.

Compacts official manufacturing year was 1960, some are said to be 1959's. The shape and layout changed in 1964, but some 1963's still had the more rounded shape. SusieQ, Lula Belle is titled as a '64 and still has the rounded shape. I thought the change to the more rectangular Compact was '65? Here's a cool picture from the inside side of the skin, this is one of the panels next to the front window. It says "128 pieces 7/31/1963." I take that to mean they made 128 of those panels in late July, 63, so they were planning on making a few more Compacts after that! OP: good luck! They're out there. I prefer the shape and the interior of the rounded ones.

It's a very cool trailer. The skin looks great. I bet almost everyone on this forum would like to spend the summer living in it. I would, especially if it's parked next to a trout stream!
I'm in my first trailer rescue, a very small trailer. From my limited experience three questions come to mind:
1) do you have a full-time job doing something other than reworking that trailer?
2) do you have as much money to rework it as it would cost to buy it?
3) do you need it _this_ summer?

our Compact: We bought it from a woman who had a title signed by the previous owner. She had never titled it in her name. We had her go to her DMV and title it in her name, then sell it to us. Oddly enough, the VIN being used by Arizona was on an aluminum plate screwed to the tongue that says "Ariz. serial no. MVDxxxxxx." Someone along the way must have transferred it without knowing where to look for the VIN. New Mexico did a VIN inspection and went with the Arizona plate, as it was what was on the Arizona title, and we didn't want to rock the boat. I recently took a wire brush to the VIN plate on the inside of the tongue and found the original VIN number. One of these days when I have time to kill (and can take the trailer to DMV) I'll get them to change it to the original VIN.
our AirFlyte: titled to a woman who died. We bought it from her husband. He's currently transferring the title into his name so he can sell it to us in a way that New Mexico will accept for an out of state transfer.
Titles are fun ...
