One of my viewers visited me recently with his family and the 58 Deville he had just finished. They use the soft canvas bunk also and the youngest son loves it. I think Tom's idea is the best and sounds like fun too. Larry, the bunk is one thing that we really haven't addressed in our Shasta, in preparation for our first camping trip the boss lady made a quick cot out of a sheet and we just use it for blankets & pillows but I would like to use the correct material so our granddaughter could sleep in it. What do you use to recreate the canvas bunk material? Danny Well I don't sew but if I were to recreate one of those bunks I would use canvas. The center pole goes through a tubed section of the canvas bunk so it's really kinda like two skinny bunks.. You might also talk to Marty from Marty's Awnings. I think I heard that she makes them as well as awnings.

probably more than you imagine it would cost, and less than you can get out of it reselling! Exactly.... You nailed it.

One of these costs about $750 installed. A bit more if you want the side closed in and you need to have either two concrete footings or a slab of concrete to put it on like your drive way. That's my 58 Deville in there at the new owner's house.

Question: Seller says there are some large dents that "should pull out" - does that really work with aluminum? Aluminum is a very soft metal. It stretches when you dent it. If you "pull it out", then you will have an outty instead of an inny. It just oil cans is all it does.

This rally is only in it's second year and they have a lot to learn about vintage trailer rallies. So it's still not very big yet. They need to have it somewhere else with some hookups and shade. You Tube Link: youtu.be/c_DPc3VNbow

I removed the body from the frame/floor as I couldn't see any alternative. The wall framing and paneling at floor level was rotten and completely gone in some places. The flooring (subfloor and the bottom sheathing just above the metal frame was in tatters. The side framing of the floor where the walls attached were rotten as well. In the long run it save me time to do it this way. I will post pictures of my restoration when it is complete. I'd like to see them. What we usually tell people to do is remove or lift the lower metal skin and just replace the skirtboards. But you need to remove pretty much everything in order to replace the entire floor so that is what usually becomes a frame off rebuild from the chassis up. Like I said you're not the first person I've seen do it your way and now I find out that Vikx even did one like that. More than one way to skin a cat right?

I would have taken that retro window out and gone back to the old style. Yes they are a funnel for leaks but if done right with glass seal gasket they can be made to be water proof. I have done that on two Shastas now and both are sealed tight and tested.

Hi Larry,
In case you have not run across the restoration of this particular trailer yet here is the link. I too have a 1964 Shasta SCS which I am almost finished restoring. Body off frame, ground up and thanks to you and your videos I was able to do it without any major catastrophes. Had I not watched your videos beforehand I would have been in deep d"" d""!
This Shasta you ran across is I believe from the Santa Rosa area and they did a fantastic job as you will see. It has inspired me in so many ways.
64shastascs.blogspot.com/2014/03/ Thanks for the link moe.. This is the second time I have seen a trailer restored in this manor where they remove the box intact from the chassis. Not really sure why one would do it this way but to each his own.

What Vikx said. These trailers are not built like houses. They are built from the inside out. So you must disassemble them from the outside in. First thing you do is remove the metal skins from the outside. You work in from there. And the only thing that holds these otherwise flimsy boxes on wheels together is the cabinets, where they are located and how they are fastened. That is where all the structural integrity is in the trailer. Remove those cabinets and you remove all the structural integrity.
We gut fish. We don't gut trailers.
