Any good ideas on a ladder for the upper canvas bunks in my 59 Airflyte? Not sure if these campers originally came with a ladder from the factory or owners just did a DIY type of unit back in the day. Or did they just heave the kids up and hope they didn't have to go to the bathroom during the night

I don't think they originally had them. You could probably use one from another camper or make one out of wood. The only negative I see with this is there's not much room in between the kitchen cabinets and the closet, so the ladder would probably end up in your way from the bottom bed when you have to get upset night. Right now in my compact I just help my 5 year old in and out, but it would be nice to not have to get up when she needs to pee hopping she will be able to climb out in a year or two

Our grandkids are big enough to climb up with just a little help.... or they’re just part monkey. Could you do a rope ladder with wood slats?

Thanks for the good suggestions. a rope ladder with the wood rungs or slats may be a great fit. It would take up a lot less room, roll up out of the way and make it a easier for the little monkeys.
I'm a long way off from the ladder but at least you all got my wheels turning.

You sit on the lower bed, cup your hands, have the kid put a foot in your cupped hands and heave them over your shoulder. The trick is to make sure they tuck their head and roll. To get down have them do the opposite. The fun will be to see if they can hit your hand coming down.
My real guess is they didn't have them because of room, and if they are that small you will need to help them and if they are bigger they don't need your help.

My daughter has been potty trained since she was two and has had very few accidents ever. Shes 5 now but I wasnt going to risk it, I bought a waterproof pad to throw up there just in case. We used it all last summer but it never actually got tested as she never has accidents anymore. But better safe than peed on lol

One of my viewers visited me recently with his family and the 58 Deville he had just finished. They use the soft canvas bunk also and the youngest son loves it. I think Tom's idea is the best and sounds like fun too.

Larry, the bunk is one thing that we really haven't addressed in our Shasta, in preparation for our first camping trip the boss lady made a quick cot out of a sheet and we just use it for blankets & pillows but I would like to use the correct material so our granddaughter could sleep in it. What do you use to recreate the canvas bunk material? Danny

What do you use to recreate the canvas bunk material? Danny Well I don't sew but if I were to recreate one of those bunks I would use canvas. The center pole goes through a tubed section of the canvas bunk so it's really kinda like two skinny bunks.. You might also talk to Marty from Marty's Awnings. I think I heard that she makes them as well as awnings.
