Previous owner coated the roof vent area with what looks like, tar. I want to get this up and seal the roof vent correctly. Is there a better way than the "heat gun and scrape" method? I'm a little afraid of doing more damage to the roof. DSCF4020 by back2denali, on Flickr

I've never had to remove tar, but as far as safe scraping goes there are plastic scrapers available at auto parts stores for a few bucks. They're usually referred to as "gasket scrapers".

Gasoline. Be careful...
Also, the vent needs to be pulled and new putty under the flange.

Saw something the other day on removing a similar coating inside a car interior. The put dry ice on it and waited a while for it to freeze. They were able to get it out in big chunks by prying it up. Might be able to take a scrapper and tape it underneath to break it loose? They were saying this was by far the easiest method they had ever tried to remove these coatings.

Thanks for the ideas folks. That will get me started. I'll post finished pics, if I get there.

That's not going to happen. I think I can use some suggestions here and make it work with a lot of elbow grease. Like my dad would say "ain't no hill for a climber".

A metal scraper is about the only thing I can think of, someone suggested a plastic scrape but it will just break with hardened tar, good luck. Danny
