We are looking at installing the Inteli-Power 4045, mostly because my husband likes that it's all-inclusive and covers everything from 110v to 12v. He is wanting to install this on the front of the gaucho. I don't recall seeing these big black boxes on the interiors of restored vintage campers. My memory seems to be that most of the folks here tuck theirs into storage areas, under dinettes, gaucho's etc. Am I wrong? He's worried about access, I say it shouldn't be necessary, minimal at best. I would appreciate hearing where you have/or are locating yours (converter, breaker box, etc.) especially if you have one of these with a "pretty" (subjective) cover. Thanks! mobiltec mel I see your on-line, I'd appreciate your opinion, he's working on the gaucho now.

Well if you want that big converter there's nothing wrong with it really. Kinda over kill though. As far as location is concerned that's a judgement call that only you guys can make. It depends on whether you need the room for storage or not.

So most people mount it so the face is exposed? I thought people were hiding them out of sight, as in inside the gaucho, maybe with access to it through storage door. Maybe the answer here is that "most" people don't use them and that is why I don't see them installed on the vintage camper pics I've been searching. @ mobiltec Is it overkill with an a/c unit?

I dont have a converter in my compact, I kept it simple(ill probably have one in the airflyte). I reused the old breaker box in the closet, got my breaker tested and bought another to have 30A service. But I would be hesitate to have that big black box showing on mine. I would maybe make my own access door out of birch and shellac it to match. But that is more work and if your thinking about the same location at shastatoms above, I dont think it will be too noticeable with the table on. I get caught up on the look of things and would maybe fixate on the box being there a while. But as everything else I would get over it and im sure your camper will look great! Someone posted a photo of the door under the gaucho and routered out slits in it for the air conditioner to come through, something like that could work maybe?

I've never used one of those. Everything I've built has had the 45 amp Intelli-Power Converter and a separate one or two breaker 110vac panel. So my trailers are wired for 30 amps. The reason that newer RVs went to 50 amp services is because of TWO AC units and 3 flat screen TVs, Microwave and washer and dryers... Skinny house on wheels. LOL And those 50 amp services are 220 by the way. Two separate 110 volt circuits just like your house. Right now we are in the middle of Electrical Wiring in my class. It's probably the hardest part to teach and that's why I don't teach it in videos. Too much of a liability. I have a controlled atmosphere in my class and I can make sure that people know all the theory needed to be able to wire their trailer safely.

The tops of the bench seats, each side of the table, in the front of my camper comes off. The batteries and convertor were in the bench box on the RH side. I didn`t install the convertor box, just the battery. Everything in My camper is 12 volt though. I`m going to wire in a plug to the side that I can plug in a solar charger when I`m going to be out for an extended time.

Turns out Progressive Dynamics is in my neck of the woods, maybe I can cut out the middle man and save some money! I see retail customers can buy refurbished items on their website, although what I want isn't there. But $10 shipping from VTS is probably less than the cost of my gas. That is what the brand of My convertor is. Made in the early seventies. it is 25 amps max output, that is not good for a deep cycle battery, the main reason I did not install it. the newer ones I am sure would be more friendly for a deep cycle battery at 1 or 2 amps. If I were using a cranking battery, it then would make no difference.

shastatom Yours looks very nice and I'm sure will mostly hidden. I would like to put mine in the bench but I thought I might not have enough room with the water tank there. I'm a little apprehensive in putting an electrical box in the same space as the water tank, hoses, etc. but your unit is quite shallow, almost half of the one my husband has been looking at. I did some sleuthing late into the night and saved up a string of these units for him to look at, although to be honest other than a few obvious details, I couldn't see how they were different even though there were big changes in price. I also can't understand how a plain converter like the 45 amp Inteli could cost almost as much as the contained units and in some cases even more. I also noted on the Progressive Dynamics website that as of 2016 they eliminated the "bus" inside because the converter didn't require it. I thought that was something that we needed. Again, no matter how hard I try I cannot wrap my head around this electrical stuff, every time I think it starts making sense................ so I know some of my comments probably seem unintelligent. On a side note, I can understand why one of these units would be appealing even though they may be overkill. For someone with basic electrical knowledge, who understands grounds, the difference between 12v & 110v, who knows they can safely choose and run the wires, this eliminates having to understand how the converting, charging and how all that works and don't have to worry about the compatibility of individual components.

I'll go ahead and introduce this unit to my class. Perhaps you are right about not having to understand much about electricity using one of these.

It says it has 3 stage charging, I think it then would be okay for the deep cycle batteries. Not real sure on that though.

Another little thing to remember on deciding where to put it is it needs some ventilation. I put my PD under one of the front dinette seats with the front exposed and available to check on. Under the table you hardly see it, and when the table is down for a bed it's as good as gone. Anyway, note the front has a vent grill, and the directions will tell you not to put it in an enclosed location.

I've taken a good look at the 4045 and I like it. It actually would make wiring a bit easier for the common trailer owner. I'll have to try one out on my next trailer. Thanks for the tip!
By the way it's about the same price, a few dollars cheaper on Amazon but I get free shipping so I would save almost $15 buying it there.
