That camper really shines. I am hoping for You, that the leaks have not been to bad and for too long. The only thing I can see the matter with that camper is, pardon me for being so critical, is, it would look a whole bunch better in the first photo if that 55 Chevy wagon had been hooked tooit. LOL welcome to the forum Brian. A lot of very nice and helpful people in here, thay will steer you right every time. Just dont listen to a lot of My posts, I have been know to be wrong on a couple of occasions. LOL, well, quite a few come to think of it. Could this be that "ITCHY FINGERS" thing that vikx had mentioned, due to it being sooo cold outside ? LOL

Hi Brian, it's great to see such a nice looking trailer. I am going to be a bit of a party pooper though, because in the picture of the kitchen and rear street side corner I can see very bad discoloration of the wood paneling. This quite often points to rot and water damage. I know you said that the previous owner had done a lot of work on the trailer, but do you know if they pulled the skin off and repaired any of the framing? Did you see pictures of the work they said was done? Unfortunately many people will just fix up the inside to look good, slap on a outside paint job and say they restored the trailer, when in fact they didn't touch any of the important stuff. I'm really hoping that this isn't the case for you, but with that much discoloration and also some I see near the front window, you would be better off to remove the skin and check the framing and skirt and sill boards. There are a couple of resources you should really check out. They are very helpful and full of all the information you could ask for about repairing or restoring these wonderful vintage trailers. The first resource is mobiltec. He makes videos and posts them on YouTube of his work sharing how to do everything on a trailer from start to finish. His website is: www.cannedhamtrailers.com and I recommend you watch this video first so you better understand why these things have to be repaired from the outside in: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDdpZgSD1JM . He does all these videos for free to help others who are interested in vintage trailers, he does accept donations from his website if you find his information as important as I have and are so inclined to help. Next is a wonderful repair manual put together by another long time member that restores trailers whose forum name is vikx. You can find the manual here : vintagetrailerrepairmanual.weebly.com Plus there's lots of information and helpful people here on the forum who can answer just about any questions you might come up with. And I'll finish by saying that you have found a very nice looking trailer, and also that I want to see that bug you have. My first car was a 1967 super beetle and I've been in love with the original bugs ever since.

Thanks for the welcomes and the resources, I'll be sure to check them out.
Yes, there some discoloration/water damage in a couple areas, worst is the drivers side rear corner. It doesn't *seem* too bad, but there's really no way to tell I suppose, short of taking the thing apart. All I know is that the people I bought it from said the PO they got it from had restored it, but who knows how good of a job they did. I've crawled all around under it and looked inside all the cabinets and everwhere its possible to look and there's no sign, other than those couple isolated areas, that it's ever leaked. But, who knows...
We're excited to start camping in it (my wife, 6 year old son, and I). We hope to take it out camping, probably just somewhere locally, in the next month or so. We all absolutely love it.

There is just so much class and cuteness in these original body vw's. They have soul and this one is just beautiful. I love their simplistic motors that can just about run forever. Even though mine was totaled in a wreak, the engine still turned over first try. I only have two vehicles I wish to this day I still had, my vw, and my '69 dodge dart. Thanks so much for sharing. And definitely take a peek under the skin in the back corner before you go taking your trailer too far down the road, bad stuff happens when wood rots. There's enough cautionary tales on here of people buying what they thought was a good trailer, only to find out as they were going down the road that it wasn't even safe enough to pull. This thread right here is on of my favorite stories of a buy gone wrong deal, but like I said there are others: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/173/worst-experience?page=1I really am not trying to scare you, I just want you to enjoy your trailer safely.

Congratulations on owning that beautiful Fleetwood. I believe 1953 was the first year Fleetwood manufactured campers. I regret that I ran across an ad on CL a number of years ago advertising a 1953 Fleetwood model 10 for sale, and I did not buy it. The only one I have seen for sale since was a totally gutted shell, without a door. I think this is the one I passed up. media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/3c/95/54/3c955451db052a711d354ef3f0333c02.jpg

I remember why you passed this one up too, Bruce, It was because you couldn't get the owner to throw in the shoehorn with it! Brian, the VW is fabulous. I wish you all the best with the Fleetwood too, as I join the chorus of "Ooohs" and "Ahhhhs". You have a great piece of history there, and I hope it serves you really well!

Thanks all. I just ordered the book referenced above and started watching some of mobiltech's videos. I have a lot to learn. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions along the way.
Yeah, I think I saw that 53 was the first year Fleetwoods were made. We really love the look of it. Hopefully I don't come to regret buying. It after I peel things back a bit...

Congrats and welcome. The three of you will make some wonderful memories with your new family member! I dont`t believe there are any regrets in owning a vintage camper. No matter what, if You peel the skin back and find wood that has rotted, that is just another adventure. A total tear down and rebuild is a learning experience and a lot of fun too. After the camper is together and complete, then there are more adventures awaiting You on the road. I enjoyed My camper when I was able to use it. I have been enjoying taking it down to the last stick and now in the process of getting it back together. Adventures in abundance are waiting for Me, My wifey and the little camper, and a good time will be had by all.

Curious to see how your 1953 Fleetwood is going! That's the trailer I'm looking at right now, too - it looks to be pretty much the exact same model as yours, only in a heckuva lot worse shape I haven't been able to find hardly ANY information out there about them.

That Fleetwood is a very nice looking trailer. If all it needs is a re-seal, make sure you do it right. We don't use any kind of calking or other goop here. This is a goop-free zone. The proper way to re-seal is by removing the things that are leaking, cleaning up the surfaces and then re-installing them with new putty tape. That's about all it takes really and you can do it one window or piece at a time on your weekends. The J Rail is an important part of the re-seal. So make sure you re-seal all of that. The top vents and windows are the other priorities. These are the places that all trailers leak.
Good luck and welcome to the forum....

Hi, We love our Fleetwood! One of the things I like about it is that you just don't see many of them... on the other hand, as you said, there really is almost no info out there on them like, say, Shastas, which have tons of info available. I'll be happy to get you pictures or what ever you need for help if you get it! Brian
