In addition to all the exterior problems, the cushions are too thin, bed too small, and the bathroom door should have been a pocket or accordian door not a swing out. Duh. It's a real shame. With a little foresight, planning, and research, these trailers could have been very nice and worth the price.

Not sure if it has been mentioned. But it turns out that when the rear gaucho is pulled out, it overhangs the bathroom door so much that you can't open it!

Shasta has done us a huge service and we all should show a little appreciation. Five years from now when you need a new stove or fridge, maybe one of those gas lamps converted to 12 volt, you will be thankful for all these fantastic parts campers being produced today.
Sure, you'll have to leave the bathroom door shut while taking the Goucho apart. And rebend the Jrail to fit your 1959 shasta. You expect the parts to just fall into your hands???

I saw this video with an explanation of opening the bathroom door with the gaucho out. I'm trying to stay positive on this re-issues. Makes me happy that it helps people get out and camp. Not everyone has the ability or the space to do a restoration and sometimes people just want new for whatever reason. My 59 Shasta Airflyte is sitting in my garage this year and waiting to bust out for some camping. She is NOT perfect, but I worked hard and tried my best to provide my family with a "vintage" camping experience. Here's the link to the video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZWRbGAUYb4#t=170

The saga goes on. With that mind set when designing I can understand why they are turning out the way they are.

Understanding how something ended up being a piece of crap does not justify it being a piece of crap. It's still a piece of crap.

I see they have a very simple solution to the door problem. It would be better if a solution was not needed, and there was not a "problem" to start with. By the way, the last thing I would look for in a new camper is a built-in dog bed!
I still stand by my original feelings...If they were going to build an Airflyte, then BUILD AN AIRFLYTE! If they were building the 16SC, then BUILD THE SC! There were not any bathrooms in the Airflyte, and with good reason. A little bit of research would have turned up lots and lots of customizing ideas that have been employed by the restorers over the years, and some of these ideas could have been easily adapted to modernize...but changing the whole design and calling it something it isn't does not work. But then again, I am not a CEO or President of a company trying to make some quick $$millions off an unsuspecting public.
Can someone teach me, in moron terms, how to "screenshot" a photo off from a flash video (youtube)? Early on in the video he is discussing the rain gutter below the wing. The no-leak explanation still does not excuse the crappy look it has....

It's saved as a JPEG that can be uploaded like a photo to photobucket. Interesting point about Shasta trying to make an Airflyte into a SC. Everything practical the Airflyte offered was because it didn't have a bathroom. A Goucho that could remain a bed, eliminating the need to break it down each day. A rear window on each side for light. Etc.

That's a really poor excuse of a "fix" for the bathroom door. You better be a thin person to get through that opening or maybe it's for the dog. And I don't think jamming the door against the cushion would be good for that very thin cushion or the door.
The appeal of these trailers as they have been marketed is understandable. My husband, who does not share my vintage passion, saw the re-issue on eBay, as did my son. Both were immediately taken by them. My husband even commented that it was a nice trailer. I know what he was thinking, that if I'd just stop this vintage madness, he'd buy me a new one. Nope. I didn't fall for it. I have a modern teardrop, and it has served me well, but the building materials of the day do not compare with the vintage builds, even though the Amish craftsmanship of the brand I own is more than decent.
Let's face it, you can't go back in time by starting over.

I don't want to go back in time, I want to go safely forward in comfort and style... Not in a rig that will fall apart around me in five years. The trailer I am building now may not be beautiful but it will be safe and dependable offering the comforts that the boss and I desire.

Haha! Didn't meant to start a philosophical debate. We do take the vintage feel with us, even when we modernize it and that in my opinion is better than making something new and crappy look like something old.

I'm part of the Facebook group w Schweet.
Mr Lucas was responsible for the reissue. It all started with his wife bringing home an Airflyte and asking him to take it to work and restore it. His wife was part of the Facebook group and sadly left the group due to all the negative posts. Unfortunately it appears most of the comments were justified.
