Hi All, What about that silver contrasting stripe? is that tape?..... Sun, wind, rain, sleet, or snow... I will look if the red new Shasta is still around my neighborhood and take a look to see how the J rail was put up on that one. I will share pix if it looks bad like the yellow one. Sorry, but from someone who was considering a white on yellow paint scheme like me, that yellow has too much mustard in it for me. Just my opinion. Someone brought up the issue about none of the retro Shastas having been seen with hubcaps. While I am on my high horse, the rims are 5 hole rims. The retro/copies of dog dish moon hubcaps may not fit. Only the vintage/original ones may fit. In my experience, the retro hubcaps will not fit the 5 hole rims which I have. At least that's my assertion. If you read the VTS site, their retro hubcaps don't fit the 5 hole rims they sell - only the 6 hole rims they sell. Rod

I'm going to contradict you on the hubcaps, VTS sells four different types of hub caps, 2 baby moon, canned ham style, and a domed. The baby's come in 9 1/2" and 10 1/2", the 9 1/2" will fit the new 5 bolt rims, the canned ham and domed may fit but not likely.

My rims only take the 10 1/2" domed moon hubcaps. Cheers Rod

Rod I drove by this Shasta again. The top of the J-Rail is down about 1/2 to 3/4" from the top. This appeared to be this way all the way along the JRail on the streetside. I didn't get out of my car to check the curbside. Cheers Rod

Seriously, when you use a 50 year old camper the perfections add to the charm. New is suppose to be perfect. No history showing. This camper shows a history of sloppy workmanship. Why not just charge $1000 more and do it right? It's hard to believe anybody picking up their new camper in this condition would accept delivery.

I don't know, Bill, that rail looks so bad even an uneducated eye should be bothered. They might just not know why. The builders of those post Katrina FEMA trailers did a better job, IMO.

I think most of them are bought by people that want the vintage look but don't know any other way to get it and probably never took a good look at a trailer with J rail on it. Also they most likely think they are getting a better, more durable unit than one that has been properly reconstructed. We shall see how it plays out over time. I would love to see one being built to see exactly how they are doing it. I wonder if they are using one staple or two and what quality of framing material is used.

All of what you said, plus they can buy a new trailer "on payments" for $39 per month, for ten years!

All of what you said, plus they can buy a new trailer "on payments" for $39 per month, for ten years! John that is most likely the absolute main selling point by most dealers. You hit the nail on the head. But if they take the family camping and traveling I guess we shouldn't knock it. Family togetherness is what the country needs more of.

They have had some serious structural flex issues with units being secured incorrectly by shippers and the front pulling away from the frame. Between the cosmetic, structural, and electrical issues I've read about and seen pictures of on the facebook page, I wouldn't consider buying one even if I couldn't rebuild an old one myself.

I couldn't do anything about the shade, but the close ups make their point. Cheers, Rod

Teachndad, Thanks for posting the photos.
Wow!
Somebody went to work with a hangover that day.
On a positive note, it would make a great parts camper.

I stopped by a dealer in N. Utah a couple of weeks ago and looked at three new Shasta's. They all had the low drip rail installed like the above pictures. Perhaps they think by making the bend/overhang on the roof skin longer and installing the drip rail lower it will help with waterproofing the joint? I'm not defending the way it is done just trying to understand the factory thought process especially after taking my roof skin off recently and seeing rotten wood under what appeared to be a good factory seal job on my 59' Airflyte.

Hangover day , first day, worst day...those screws that were shown in pic on close up were all over driven...not acceptable in my book for a fresh, off the line camper. With that being said, the owner drove it home , so maybe they are happy with that. To echo another's thought, at least they are camping...and that beats me at the moment. Good on em'.
