Is this one that you have seen in person, or have access to? I think you could be well on the way to successful sleuthing if you could make out any wording from that sticker or badge over the front windows. I can't tell anything from the photos. It looks like a manufacture name (like the "Shasta" stickers over the top on the Shastas...) That looks like the best bet to be sure. But someone may still recognize this one. The rear door entry, and the wheel well cutouts are fairly good features to go by. Also, the 2 marker lights on the front seem like they would be a giveaway to someone that knows......
I would suggest checking the tongue carefully for markings, if you do have access. There may be a manufacturing tag there somewhere that is more specific that the State tag pictured.

Close-up on that old decal above the window might help, almost looks like there was a logo on the left.

When I was trying to research and find my mystery trailers brand. I saw that some fireball and Lakewood's had this skin pattern. Might search them and see if any matches. Good luck.

I do have access It belongs to a friend of mine. His dad got it from an old sheep hearder friend a long time ago. His dad has past away and of course there is no paperwork for it. I think I am going to check the vin number on the tounge and see if DMV can find anything on it ( such as make, model, year, and the last reg. owner). My buddy wants me to take it but I have read all of the comments on getting something without paperwork and I am very skeptical. I try and learn from others experiences and mistakes. lol

Just out of curiosity, which state are you in?
I think the DMV is probably a real good first bet. Especially since you have the history and the owner at your disposal. I would not be too scared about the no-paperwork aspect in that case. There has to be a way to track it all down and be able to transfer owners.

I would not be too scared about the no-paperwork aspect in that case. There has to be a way to track it all down and be able to transfer owners. There should be a disclaimer to the fear of a lack of paperwork. If you do your homework BEFORE you purchase a trailer, in most cases you can get the trailer registered. The main problem here in CA is that the state wants that $87 for registration every year for a "piece of junk" that is sitting in the back yard being used for storage. People ask the DMV how to get out of paying the fees each year. Two ways. One, sell it. Two scrap it. So they legally scrap it, on paper, it doesn't really get scrapped. That way they can continue to use it as storage. In many cases, the person who did the scrapping either dies or moves on and the trailer is left behind. Then the new owner of the property wants to get rid of it, figures to sell it without a title and let the new buyer take care of what ever fees are involved. BUT...... It is later discovered that the trailer has been legally scrapped and now there is no legal way to re-title it. That exact thing just happened to me so I know of what I speak. My little Layton was part of an estate I purchased and I have used it for storage for the last 6 years. You people saw me use a router on the metal for the first time on that trailer. I sold it in less than 24 hours on Craig's list. Bill of sale only. The poor guy tried to register it and no go. He brought it back and I generously refunded his money. Not too many people would have done that I bet. I don't roll that way.

Larry doesn't California offer a salvage title and a new serial number? What do they do for a home built unit, like a teardrop? Couldn't you grind off all old ID and say you built it from salvage parts?

I could get a salvage title if the owner was alive. If you can't find the person who "scrapped" it, you can not get a salvage title. And as far as grinding numbers off a frame is concerned, well... that's kind of illegal and although most people could probably get away with it, I just don't put myself in those situations. Remember that it's the frame that is assigned the VIN and not the box.

This is California, everything is difficult when it comes to vehicle reg ~ they want there $$$. I'm so Leary to pick up a trailer that doesn't have any paperwork. I think all of Larry's story's kinda scare me. So I have the son of the dad that past away doing the DMV leg work before I say yes I will haul it off for him. I know his dad acquired the trailer from an old sheepherder friend years ago but no telling if this sheepherder friend gave him paper work for it or if he didn't pay the reg' and decided to call it scrapped to avoid paying the reg. I am still hoping DMV will tell the son who the last registered owner was and what year/model the trailer is. Stay tuned.

I guess I did not realize how tough California is to deal with. I am going through a similar situation with the Airflyte, except it was the owner's son who sold it to me, it never left their family. NYS DMV has a form that is filled out by the P/O to certify the original registration is not available. Simple. The State does not require continuing registration, only when it is on the road. So, there is no "back" amount, only sales taxes on the transfer price.

You must own the property that any trailer might be on and it must be abandoned for at least 6 months before you can move it. You must file, then let it set for 6 months and then you can do what ever you want with it other than register it if it has been legally scrapped. If it has been scrapped you need a bill of sale from the owner. Mine is dead. From your website. "If the abandoned vehicle is a salvage vehicle, it no longer has a title, but rather a salvage certificate. If it is not already certified as such, apply to have the car certified as a salvage or nonrepairable vehicle. In California, this is the Application for Salvage Certificate or Nonrepairable Vehicle Certificate (REG 488C). •Doing this yourself can be tricky, as it must be signed by the legal owner and include documentation of ownership."
Even if I went through all this garb and was able to finally get a title, it would cost more than this trailer is worth. I have another trailer with a bill of sale only from a friend and I just found out that it's going to cost me over $700 to register but it's worth it. So make sure and do your homework before you put any big money out.

Sell it to a relative or friend in another state and let them title it. That was my alternative plan.

Then it has to be placed on a flat bed and trailered to the border to be moved legally. You can't even get a one trip permit for them here. I tried.
