Today was a big day! Let the priming begin: Jim builds an impressive "spray booth" with rope, staples and plastic! Oh and rafters... Getting ready to paint by Corvett crzy, on Flickr First I had to fix my big flub and remove the packing tape and residue. This required overnight citristrip, followed by scraping, followed by soaking with paint thinner, followed by more scraping and ultimately steel wool dipped in paint thinner. Then Petals was bathed and wiped down with denatured alcohol. Prime by Corvett crzy, on Flickr The we tucked her in to her new cosy booth Prime by Corvett crzy, on Flickr I can't get over how great this booth turned out Prime by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Time to spray Prime by Corvett crzy, on Flickr We had some problems with the gun and hose made unexpected contact a couple times. but all in all it worked out.

Can you tell me what what kind of sprayer you are using? Is it an HVLP turbine system? I've been thinking of getting one.

I've been following nccamper's $200 paint job instructions. Neither one of us has really painted with a gun before so we're learning as we go. I picked this gun up at Harbor Freight for about $20. Mostly because it was similar to what nc was using, it said it could be used for latex. When we were done we realized that we should have thinned the primer more and the gun would have worked much better, it was kind of "spitting" as my husband says. Primer gun by Corvett crzy, on Flickr I bought the Purple Hvlp gun many people use for spraying the ACE Paint. We are using their enamel. Not sure if that answers your question. I don't know what a turbine system is.

Another busy day = After trying to get as much of the 60 year old dirt off of a bench seat as I could, I replace the old rotted material with felt. So my 16 wouldn't be too creaped out to sleep on it! Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr I am amazed at how these springs still look, no rust, they sure used some good paint back then. Now days we'd rather just put 3 times as much stuff in the land fill than to have things last. Not so sure that's better for the environment, maybe right now, maybe not when the littles grow up. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Task for the day was to get the stripes painted before the weather turned bad. It took me until 1:30 am, but I got it done. It was a learning curve. I got better in the middle! Used ACE enamel rattle can, so I stayed with the same product line, but don't see any sense in buying a quart of paint for just the stripes. Also discovered a new product (at least new to me) Snot Tape. Some good, some bad, need to find something better to make curves. Most of the problems I encountered were due to the curves. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr SnotTape Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr It comes as one piece with "snot" on both edges, the tape between is NOT sticky, well maybe slightly sticky. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr I used a utility knife and split the roll in the middle so I'd have double the product. Stuff's not cheap $10 a roll, plus oddly they recommend on the box, just sealing 1 side.? So I used blue tape to tape the plastic to the score tape. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr It does come off very easy. This primer is 24 hours old, I did a test spot first just in case. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Now here's one of the problems, if you're making a horizontal line, the "snot" is thicker than normal adhesive on tape so when you paint it build up on the bottom edge and you get this (only on the bottom). Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr After I let it dry about 20 minutes, I found that if I ran my nail along the edge, it flaked off. This is enamel paint, do not know if it would do that with latex. Here scraping. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Same spot after. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr I just taped off the outside edges, filling it in with another color but it this picture I had taped off both sides of the stripe, this is the size it will be. forward - top of pic. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr This is what I mean about curves. It is very difficult to curve tape, snot or whatever. It puckered around the curves so I re-sealed it as best I could before I sprayed it and I still had bad spots. And you can't get a nice smooth curve if you piece the tape to make it. Ugh. Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Oh Well, that's one of the great things about "old" things, no one expects them to be perfect. Gotta get some sleep now.

Thank you for the info! Nothing like a sharp nail to finish a great job... That's why trailer builders have a few claws, just in case...

Second Red day! Here's an idea: Don't do this................ Stripes by Corvett crzy, on Flickr At first I thought it was kind of cool to be able to see what the stripe would look like correct width. Bad idea, we had to put extra coats of red on to try to cover up the white strip. We put on 3 coats and you could still see it. After the 4th I said that's enough. If you know it's there you can still see it, but it's not worth it to mess it up. More red Feeling red by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Red day 2 by Corvett crzy, on Flickr She's going to turn out pretty bright, but hey if you don't want people to notice you, don't pull around a vintage camper!!

Also received the light I bought to cover the hole in the upper cabinet from the "plug"! Got it a vintage camper, and I love it. Great quality, perfect size, and although it's a "license plate light" It'll be perfect to see what you're doing if your trying to hook up at night and don't want to wake up the neighbors. Another day of painting. It's rewarding but you can't get anything else done. But we have to take advantage of the weather while we can. Looks like tomorrow will be the last day! We'll have to drag all the paint out soon though because we didn't get the door finished enough to paint. Feeling sunny today! Today is yellow by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Today is yellow by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Have to share the bad with the good - had some paint peel when I removed tape from the black stripe. I had at least 1 spot one each side, but the first side we painted was the worst. Primer came off with the black. I think it's because we rushed painting the black, but it might have been because it was rattle can, who knows, but fairly easy touch up. Oh and it's amazing how much overspray there is. I thought we had cover enough extra to ensure no red paint, but look at the roof. Take my word for it, just cover the WHOLE darn thing. Today is yellow by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Can't expect a showroom finish if you've never used a spray gun before! I'm very happy with the results so far. I see only 1 run and hopefully it might be gone by morning.

More Painting..................man are we tired, working all day then all night, but the weather is changing and it feels really good to have this mostly done. It was the part of the restoration I was most concerned about. Being able to do a satisfactory job at minimal cost. Well I think we did really well. It's not perfect. We have some touch ups to do, but all in all, I'm proud of our first attempt. I also feel better about the color choices. I have been worried more than a couple times that I would regret the color scheme. But the truth is I love these colors and if other's don't, well at 50 mph on the freeway they won't have to look at it for long. But I love it!! And it didn't turn out as "shocking" as I was afraid it might. Can't wait to get all the tape and plastic of to see the final results. Today is pleasantly purple!! by Corvett crzy, on Flickr

It's been a busy weekend! Started out by finishing up the second bench seat, then built 4 cupboard doors Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Bought a new water tank a while back, before we got the side skin on and realized the inlet was too low for the attachments on the tank. It took a while to figure out what to do. Finally decided to put the tank on an angle, making use of that curve in the front (to give a little extra room for hook ups) and it lowers the fill on the tank, so at least it's a bit of a downward stream. Put aluminum in to keep it secure. Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Finished blocking in the porta potti so it can't slide and slosh around while traveling, made a separate compartment to hold storage. I think I can stack toilet paper in front of the potti. Hhhmmm maybe I should divide that off............ Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Cut the aluminum out for under the stove. Yep, cut it wrong so I'm going to use a filler piece, which won't show anyway, but I'm going to insulate under so the wood doesn't catch on fire. I seem some on here take their stoves out to find charred wood underneath. Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Cut out the aluminum for all the windows and access doors, even got a couple installed. And the last task was to install that cool light I ordered for the old "Extension cord" opening. Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Busy weekend by Corvett crzy, on Flickr JIm worked on rebuilding the door and door frame. Tired, will sleep well tonight. Want to finish up water and start putting windows in tomorrow.

Busy weekend with kid events but managed to get a few things done on Sat. and today. We are getting down to the wire, have a trip planned beginning this weekend -- we'll see how much we can get done. Installed the water lines. Had to reconfigure a little, will test tomorrow. Sat by Corvett crzy, on Flickr How do you like my replacement for the irreplaceable drain that I managed to lose. My answer was a funnel. I cut off the bell and what was left was almost identical to the piece I lost, along with the metal spout. I thought, why not use it. Attached it to pex using a dishwasher line part from Menards. Sat by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Unfortunately the door wasn't built when we decided to take advantage of good weather and paint. We may or may not get it painted before our trip. You can see the only major detour from the original. The round window in the door. It was one of the things that we saw in the article that started us down this journey. We love the round window, so it was worth it for us. Now just to get it painted and installed. Almost there, 3 days left before our trip. by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Final install of the stove and a temp install of the fridg. The long range plan is to attach the old Ice Box door, but it'll have to wait a few weeks. Braced it on both sides and hooked it up, testing tomorrow. Almost there, 3 days left before our trip. by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Built the table, but didn't laminate the formica, planning on a little decorative touch, later on. Cut the formica to size and used the old trim to hold it in place. Then realized that my particle board was too thin. Since my teenager will be sleeping there on the trip I'm going to put a layer of birch on the back to protect the trim from bending. Almost there, 3 days left before our trip. by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Installed the cabinet doors on the kitchen cabinet, did some touch ups on the paint, and installed the new door handle. Oh and checked the light = yay! only 1 burnt bulb. Well, more tomorrow!

Tonight I hung some of the curtains. 2 days left by Corvett crzy, on Flickr 2 days left by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Jim cut the pipes for the bunk before he went off to bed, unfortunately one was a little long but it was still fun to see the bunk up for the first time. 2 days left by Corvett crzy, on Flickr You can see that since we've run out of time, we decided to put in the slats and fold it out into a bed for the trip, we'll install the sliding couch when we return. My son was concerned that he wouldn't fit in his designated sleeping area, looks like it's just big enough. Now I just hope he doesn't kick the wall, yes there's a story there. 2 days left by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Tomorrow some more odds and ends, locktight all the little nuts on the hehr windows - it hasn't left the barn and some are already falling off. Will water test it while it's donw. Weather strip the door. Take it for a drive on the freeway and test the water systems. Fired up the fridge, it's ice cold. Work on the rest of the curtains and finish up the awning.
