Yep - forget I asked the question - I need to talk him into doing a conversion to 7 pin and leave it at that - would be stupid to use a fragile 4 pin setup - could be ruined very easily...

I agree, go with the 7 way. Future upgrades are easy that way.
That said, you can get 4 way ribbon in several gauges. It works well for tow lighting; just be sure to follow the 7 way code, not the 4 way. I wouldn't go with 18 gauge but 16 should be OK.
7 way cords have several gauges of wire. Brakes are 12 gauge. Tow wiring is 14 ga. Ground is usually 10-12ga and the charge wire is 10-12ga; depends on the company making the cord.
You can join the wiring in a J box near the tongue which makes for easy repairs.
