I either get lucky when hooking up my truck to the trailer or spend 20 minutes getting frustrated doing the one inch shuffle. So I realized I need a back-up camera to keep my sanity. Anyone have a particular recommendation on a model? I started looking at wireless back up cameras on Amazon so hopefully I can get one that will help get me hooked up like a pro. LOL.

I bought one that lasted 2 months, I think the next one I buy will not be wireless because the company is giving me a hassle to try and get a new sending unit.

Back up camera. Ha ha ha. A very good friend of mine was using his new back up camera. He forgot the rest of the world around him. He did 2600.00 damage to the front fender, grill and lights. At 2 mph backing up hooking up to his trailer. Just last month.

That is why the truck has mirrors on both sides, so you can back up to your trailer. The biggest mistake most people make is trying to use their center mirror when backing up.

Bigbill, Haha, you just reminded me of the one good thing that came out of my first marriage - my ex husband taught me to use my mirrors for backing. I can drive backwards...LOL. But I can't see the little ball that is backing to the hitch. It hangs low, you see... Poquito

Wal Mart does have one for about $60 - the camera part attaches to the license plate holder on the back of the truck and I suppose you use the monitor part to see what is down there behind you. I do get close, I'm just sometimes am off by a couple of inches one way or another. Just don't want to spend money on a piece of junk. I already have plenty of that!

I got one off amazon to hook to my pioneer avh 4600. It does a good job in the day time but nothing at night. It was only around $30. I can tilt it down right at the ball when hooking up trailers. It makes it a lot easier so it’s worth it to me.

My new Chevy has a camera, as do all new vehicles I think by law now. It’s hard to get used to in my opinion. I much prefer a second person to guide me in, or creep in if alone. But I’m not a professional trailer backer guy like some of you. But, I’ve been thinking of getting one for the back of the trailer. Would be nice to know what’s back there on lane changes on freeways in strange cities ( when such travel can’t be avoided). Even with mirror extensions my 8’ wide is impossible to see directly behind. Anyone tried this?

if you learn to back to the trailer by watching the position in your mirrors you should be able to know when you are centered and when to stop. All it takes is a little practice. The only trailers that I ever had a problem with is round nose tankers, the don't have corners to help guide you. I''m not knocking back up cameras as they would help people that don't have the time to practice.

Bill is exactly right. You use your side mirrors to center yourself. Then all you need to know is when to stop. That's a depth perception thing that you will get used to. I usually get close, get out of the vehicle to take a look. Then I see that it is about 6 inches straight back, leave the door open, line up something in the door way with a part of the ground and move 6 inches back. You're there. I teach people to back their trailers up without jack knifing or hitting things, how to park, set the trailer up and all the little things involving towing when I sell a trailer. I usually use an empty parking lot, maybe a church lot or what ever I can find. Cones help a lot for backing practice.

I park my trailer in a carport attached to my house, which is at the apex of U-shaped driveway, so I'm always backing up at an angle. For that, and other reasons, I'd like to install something similar to this: linkA camera on the rear of my vehicle for hitching, and a camera on the rear of the trailer. Wireless transmitter at rear of vehicle for dash display.

....and a camera on the rear of the trailer. Wireless transmitter at rear of vehicle for dash display. Camera on the back of the trailer WOULD be nice when backing into camp site AND seeing just how close that jerk pulled up behind you when you're stopped on an incline.

Just don't be so caught up with looking at the back up screen that you do damage to the sides of the trailer or your vehicle...
