Wow! These pics could go in the “Rot Hall of Fame” thread! But unlike most trailers of this vintage, it still has real wood paneling and the ham-ish shape. It’s going to be beautiful. Don’t let the “cutters” talk you into chopping off the overhang! No way I'm cutting off the overhang! In fact I'm trying to figure out the best way to reinforce the (new) framing so I can sleep up there!

I remember seeing a thread on ordering Colombia Forest Products 1/4" birch plywood from Home Depot, but I can't seem to find it any more. I'm getting ready to start a trailer project and need to order the materials. Has anyone gone through the special order process at HD, what were your thoughts on the quality of the Colombia Forest Products plywood? Are you trying to replace 1/8 inch paneling with 1/4 inch plywood? If so it's not a good idea for a number of reasons. Pretty sure many of the interior components of my trailer were made with 1/4". I know the roof panels are 1/8" to form the curves of the roof. I live in South Florida and finding sources outside the big box stores is tough.

I believe that's the same wheel size I have on my trailer. It was found on several 60's Ford models, including the Falcon and the Comet. I found a spare by searching Ebay.

Something else to consider on the laminates and vinyl planks: they're made for residential use in a climate controlled environment. They expand and contract based on the ambient temperature and many can't handle the swings that occur in a camper. Some manufacturers specifically state that their products should not be used in recreational vehicles. There are some that work fine in RV's and campers, but you need to do your research.

I can't quite tell from your pics, but you should make sure the top of the steel reinforcement is a little lower than the top of your wooden rafter. If the steel is in contact with the aluminum roof, it might create galvonic corrosion.

In my opinion, rotten framing is best addressed from the outside. You really can't even assess the situation until you see what's going on underneath. I would start by removing the trim and the lower panels so you can inspect the framing. Once you see how much rot there is in the framing, how the framing is joined with the floor, and how much rot there is in the floor, you'll be able to make an educated decision on how to proceed. One of the best ways to learn is by watching mobiltec's videos at www.cannedhamtrailers.com/.

When I painted my frame, I went with POR-15 and was VERY happy with the results. Just make sure you use the "Top Coat" product anywhere the frame will be exposed to the sun (the standard product dulls when exposed to UV). I was able to achieve a finish that rivaled powder coat by finishing off with "Top Coat" from a spray can. www.por15.com/

Can you tell me what what kind of sprayer you are using? Is it an HVLP turbine system? I've been thinking of getting one.

+1 on what Theresa said. Unless you remove (or at least lift) the skin, you will have no way of knowing exactly what kind of damage there is to the framing. I know it seems like a lot of work, but you're better off doing the job right the first time.

So, we recently purchased a 67 Frolic cab-over trailer. In reality, its more like a "template" for a 67 Frolic, because it is going to need a total frame up restoration. We haven't jumped into the project yet, but I'm starting to do some planning. The trailer came with an original Peerless (LP) furnace. I like to keep things (close to) original and I like its vintage look of the furnace. But, I don't know if it's worth saving. I'm not sure if its safe and it takes up a lot of valuable real estate. One down side to removing it though, is that it guarantees that I will have to replace at least part of the aluminum skin. The furnace has a VERY large exhaust on the street side. Removing the furnace will leave a very large hole in the skin. Should we keep it? Furnace 2 by pdalber, on Flickr Furnace 1 by pdalber, on Flickr

Beautiful work! Where did you mount the black water tank? Any pics of the install? I'm going to be putting a toilet in the camper I'm working on. But, I'm not sure if I'll install a black water tank or go with a porta potty.
