Wondering what to do about gaskets/sealing up my lights and power inlet areas. Some of my newer lights (tail) and power inlet came with their own gaskets (spongy things) but I'm wondering if I should put sealant around them. Some of my new lights came with nothing. I have some silicone sheets but someone told me to use butyl tape which frankly would be easier at this point. Anyone do this? Thoughts?

I used butyl tape around most things. I like the softness and when I took the 54 apart I didn't seem to have any leaks around any spot that used butyl tape.

I prefer the putty tape to the butyl. It comes back apart a lot easier if I screw something up. I have never seen silicone stand up to the test of time. The spongy gaskets work well at first, and I have found traces of them in some real old projects I have worked on, but they do harden up and lose their seal also. For that matter so does putty. But going into it expecting that to happen is a part of the process.

What about the random screws that holds the skin to the framing? What would you use on those? Maybe a little gutter seal?

Gutter seal works well on body screws. Wipe carefully so it doesn't glob...

Do you put the gutter seal on the screw threads before you tighten them down, or just on the heads after?

I put a tiny dab in the screw hole before driving the screw, then wipe once it's seated.
