Finding this gunk underneath the rail and along the panels. Has anyone seen this before? I think it should clean up fairly easily.

Possible that it's remnants of butyl rubber tape?

Possible that it's remnants of butyl rubber tape? I thought so, but it's like tar and almost looks like it had a fabric holding it together. Whatever it is, they used it to seal all the seams.

My 57 Shasta has cloth backed tape, but it's definitely putty. They REALLY didn't want these trailers to leak. That's why there are still survivors today.

Study carefully as you go. You may need to replace the tar with appropriate sealing tape; maybe 1/16 thick butyl or?? Let the trailer tell you.

I found it on my shasta as well in stops. I found if you scrap it off with a stiff putty knife and then use mineral spirits it will come off but you have to have a very damp rag. I would normally run a soaking rag over it and let it sit for a couple minutes and then scrub. It will fill up any type of brush so don't bother.
