I have a rock guard on the front of my Shasta that the previous owner installed from a different camper...it works well but the finished gel-coat is gone and its fiberglass fibers have surfaced. Can I just have it re-coated? Is there someone out there that is restoring them or making new fiberglass inserts? I surely just don't want to paint over it cuz I know that that isn't really helping to preserve it...any ideas or help?
I did think of getting a sheet of that courogated product from Lowe's but its too deep for the thickness of my frame..so scratch that idea.
Thanks, Randy

Shastabear, Thanks for starting this thread! I have the same issues with mine, it is all intact and works great but the finish is fiberous and it is discolored, yellowed with some black/grey. I did not know that it was supposed to be a different texture? I will be interested to see what those with experience have to say. That would stink to have to replace the panels...I hope it does not come to that for you!

Go to an auto parts store an purchase a can of fiberglass resin then lay the rock guard flat and mix your resin and brush a coat over the surface this will give you a new hard surface and will contain all the loose fibers. then sand and paint with desired color. It may take more than one coat to get the surface you desire also only mix the amount you can brush on in a few minutes as the resin hardens by chemical reaction. Use cheap brushes that you can throw away. Read directions on can of resin.

Aloha! Speaking of Rock Guards, might you know where I could find one for a 1964 Shasta Airflyte? That's if they actually came with them to begin with. I'm still trying to ascertain exactly what I have and what it originally looked like inside and out. Seems there were some modifications to this one along the way. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Aloha!

Either way, i'm sure yours had a rock guard. If it would be of help, i can post a photo of mine. It's currently unrestored, that's going to be a spring project for the coming year...

Aloha Hoosierpoet! I believe this would be considered the toaster style. The top front protrudes a bit more then slants slightly backward to the bottom and 1964 was supposedly the year that style began. My confusion now arises from finding there were many models that year/time period - Airflyte, 16SC & SCS (Compacts? Which this isn't), 1200, 1300, 1500, and such. So now I'm not sure exactly what I do have. Would love to locate something that breaks down and shows all the various years and models. Forgetting all of that, I can't believe that any were created with front glass windows and nothing to protect them but I am new at this and have much to learn; anything is possible. I'd love to see a pic of yours and would happily post some of mine if I could figure out a way to load them from my iPad. I appreciate any and all assistance, knowledge, expertise, and pics all would care to offer. I am already addicted and I've barely begun!

A rock guard is something that, "just makes sense." I would like to put one on my 64 1500 but cannot find a used one at all. VEry few old camper places in the Chicago area that have this type of item. So looking to build one I have started to research making and found some nice ideas. They just lack the specifics on the hinge area and mounting with what brackets. Vintage trailer has side arms but what about that hinge? Do I take off the drip visor above the window. Can anyone help me with some good photos or plans or ideas? Am I frustrated? Yes? Yes? of course. And why is my camper called a 1500 and not some neat name like, Super Astro Magna Flight Compact Grandeouse Camper? Shasta just ran dry on the 1400 and 1500 name. Ugh! Oh well, anyone?

Yes, yours would be the first model yesr, I think, for the toaster. But I do think the rock guard would be the same, or close to the same. Here are a couple photos of mine. It has hinged posts on the sides, there's a sort of slider on the guard that slips over and tightens with a thumb screw. it just had three standard-type hinges on top, they screwed into the window frame. (you have to be careful if replacing the screws - I thought mine were plenty short, but they were still too long and the windows wouldn't open!) and the 'eyebrow' goes over them. So the top of the rock guard is essentially sandwiched between the window frame and the rock guard.

Hoosierpoet: is this your '61 Airflyte? If yes, I'm back to confused again. Just yesterday, while perusing the old ad and brochure folders, I convinced myself what I had was a 1500 vice an Airflyte. I saw an old ad for the 1500 and two ads for the Airflyte. The Airflyte ads showed one like my trailer and one not which added to the confusion but I settled on the 1500 mostly due to the shape, front window, side vent placement, and interior layout. Now, when I look at your pictures I see my trailer but in much better and prettier condition! Or so I think. There are some differences such as the vents but the front window is the same as is the style. I really do need to find a computer vice my iPad to post pictures so that you much wiser than me folks will have a better idea of what you're helping me with! In the meantime, thank you for posting the pics of the rock guard. I'm thinking the concept is the same no matter which trailer it's on. Maybe? Aloha!

Go get a piece of aluminum skin and install that in there and polish it. You can even put brakes in it. Just rivet it in all the way around. Looks great....

Aloha Mobiltec! I just, and mean just, clicked into your website and was greeted with a great picture of a red truck and what I believe is this trailer. The truck reminds me of my Handy-Andy-Dandy-Man's last Ford truck restoration - gorgeous! Gotta get me one! The next thing that caught my attention was the guard on the perfectly matched attached trailer. Excellent idea. Thank you.

Alhoa Aloha... Yep just finished that one a few months ago. Just started a 59 so watch for that one. The Rock Guards are Bob Ross' work. He does excellent metal work.
