They just don't know where they are or many times what they are. You must look for yourself. Ace Hardware has them and Home Depot has them and in both stores I have been told that they don't have them when in fact they do. Not sure about Lowes though.

Lowe's does not have them and really nothing similar, either.

We have a "commercial strip" of 5 businesses in the middle of our subdivision...(homes built in the 50's) one is a small mom and pop hardware store with the round revolving bins of nails by the pound...yep, you guessed it, they have at least two sizes of twisty nails. Try to remember where you might have a store with nails by the pound, and check there.

VB, heck buddy, please post or PM me the name of that small business and I'll give them some business. I'm sure even with shipping it'd be less expensive than buying teeny packets of them from a big, on line fastener company..
I'm still gonna check a couple of ACE hardware stores within driving distance of my abode..haven't given them a look yet.

I don't use twisty nails, but I saw some at Linoleum City, in Hollywood, CA. last week.
This business should be posted to the main VTT vintage supplier link. They are a great source for Southern California restorer's.

Yep they are used for metal flooring trim and there are two main sizes. 7/8 and I think 1 1/4 inch. Many times you have to look in the flooring section of a big store to find them. They are a bugger to remove and an even bigger bugger to install but I found a way do make the install job easier and quicker using a palm nailer.

I'm going to check to see what sizes that little hardware store had tomorrow, so I appreciate the size info mobiltec. I just saw twisty nails and thought, hmm, maybe they are trailer size, but did not measure them..

I was able to find the 7/8 size at both a little mom & pop hardware store and our local Cal Ranch (farm and ranch type store). I bought everything they had!!!

Yes try carpet section at big box store...I predrill my holes before installing. But am going to try my finish nail gun on some today. I pre-drill the holes, stick them all in a little ways with my thumb, and then finish them all off with my palm nailer that I bought at HF for less than $29. I love that thing and it works great. You just have to make sure not to oil it too much and keep the water out of your compressor tank so it doesn't spray liquids all around the nail. Don't pre-drill too big of a hole. You want the nail to do it's job. Don't pre-drill it too deep. I only go a quarter inch deep. Home Depot has them in the small plastic packets at the end of the fastener isle. They come in gold and silver. 7/8 inch long.

I predrill through the first piece of wood (you are nailing two pieces together right?), that way you have to deal with some woods splitting. I figured most could figure that you use a drill bit smaller than the nail you are using, but in case you didn't --use a smaller drill than the nail you will drive. I use a small finish hammer I got 40 years ago at a garage sale for twenty five cents. AND in case you didn't guess, I don't oil the hammer either. ;>)
