I think waxing would help a lot; very good quality wax. As far as cleaning, hopefully others will chime in. I know the car detailers have some pretty slick products.

'Mothers aluminum polish' and a cheap harbor freight cloth buffing heads polishing kit. A six pack of your favorite beverage might help if the aluminum is getting the white residue cause it will take some elbow grease. It's meant for wheels but did a great job on Scotty's windows, hinges and latches. Use the buffing heads in a drill or angle grinder.

Do a search on a product called "Zoop Seal". Made for the automotive industry. Used after cleaning to create a seal over aluminum. Used on custom wheels, polished intake manifolds, blowers etc. Dries totally clear.
