I spoke with Steve at Hemet Valley this afternoon. He said they stopped using the h-seam because it leaked so often. He said to overlap the front over the back by 1 inch. Run a bead of silicone between the pieces and put a line of screws about 10-12 inches apart.
If the s-fold is being overlapped, then remove the nailing tab (and the underside of the fold) on the top layer (forward) for that inch overlap. This will allow the top s-fold to lay flat against the bottom layer(rear). Be sure to put a screw into the s-fold. If any silicone pushes out of the seam, let it dry and then rub it off.
Since my curb-side seam is at the back of the door frame, and the s-fold won't be overlapped, I can skip that last part. I think I will be alright on the street-side also, because the seam/s-fold will be at the backside of the kitchen window frame.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

We purchased new aluminum from Hemet Valley, but they were unable to provide the full length side pieces. So we have 4 side pieces instead 2 for each side. I have seen some talk of just overlaying the two pieces and sealing, but have also seen references to vertical seam (H-seam?). But, I haven't seen much detail given. Does anyone know where to find vertical seam and how to install it? Do I need it for a 4 foot seam? On the curbside, it will be just the area above and below the left hand side of the door frame. On the streetside it will be along the right side of the kitchen window (so above the window about 1 ft and below the window about 4 ft).
I guess the Shasta's didn't normally need these, since they were relatively short.
Thanks, Dana

I am rebuilding the rear Gaucho Bed for our 1960 Deluxe 19ft. Does anyone have the dimensions of the cushion/mattress? Based on some old threads, I have come up with a few options, but it would be great to know what the original was.
Thanks to Mobiltec for all of his videos and classes.
Thanks, Dana

Found some smaller doors for the baggage compartment. They are shorter than the bed.

Were the bench seats typically vinyl from that era? The bottom layer on mine are plaid fabric (like a burlap weave).

This is it exactly. I am tempted to use smaller doors, if I can find 2 that match. My other thought is to "finish" the back side of the doors - reinforce edges with wood and put birch on them so they look nice. Hate to have a large door and only be able to use part of the opening.

Great idea. We knew we would have to replace the cast iron because it was completely rusted out in a couple of places. As we found it, only the kitchen sink (cold water only) was still attached, and it was draining freely to outside. What kind of port-a-potty did you end up getting?

I have a 1960 Shasta Deluxe. The baggage doors are too large to fit underneath the bed. The previous birch extended into the door opening by a couple inches - When you open the baggage door from the outside, you see the old insulation and a couple inches of the birch paneling. Has anyone else encountered this? If so, how did you handle it. I'd hate to have the doors open above the bed frame, but the paneling left exposed in the door is not great either. My old 57 Shasta had doors that fit fine under the bed but were top hinged, as compared to side hinged on the 1960.

Does anyone have pictures of their 1960 era Shasta seating? We have a 19'Deluxe and the lowest level of fabric on our bankette seats are really ugly plaid fabric. Would be great to see a picture of an original seat - was it cloth or vinyl, etc. Our rear bed/sofa was also missing - so any pictures of that would be great to see also.
Thanks!

The fiberglass blackwater tank on our 1960 Shasta Deluxe leaks. It worked well holding some critter's hickory nuts, but with less than a gallon of water, it started leaking in multiple places. Any ideas on where to get a replacement? Its an odd shape - The top portion is 12"wx16"lx8"deep, the bottom portion is 6.5"wx16"lx7" deep. Looks sort of like an upside down L. If my calculations are right it would have been a 15 gal. tank. If I just used a rectangular tank I could get 12 gal. Not very big though.
Thanks, Dana

The front corners were rotten as was the base of the streetside wall. Rear corners were also rotten, and the entire floor needed replacing.

The 57 Shasta Special had the dinette in the front, kitchen in the middle and 3/4 bed in the rear. The kitchen was a 3 burner cook top over an icebox, and a sink. The only thing that popped out at us as being different than a normal 57 Shasta was there were no side windows up front. It just had the large window that opened and the two non-opening windows beside it. There was no cabinet above the sink, when we got it, but the marks on the ceiling told us there was one, so we replaced it. The original water tank, was rectangular about 2 inches thick. It stood on its side in a rack along the sink. Next to the door was a single wardrobe that we put shelves in for more storage.

The pre Compact has moved to Indiana. Found an owner who has a convertible that has the same paint color.
