So, I wanted to post the unfortunate (but nonetheless good) news here since you all have been so helpful throughout my restore.. I SOLD THE SHASTA. I didn't really want to, but with a family of 5 it just. didn't. make. sense. And time.. I just didn't have the time to finish it. I would like to say I do, but I don't. A 1000 things going and right now, there was MUCH more work to do that I just didn't have the time for. I sold it to someone about an hour away who is willing, able, and has the time (seemingly) to work on it and finish it out. I told her has to send me photos when it's done. On a side note.. it's not a canned ham, but it is vintage..and is in much more campable shape than the shasta. SO, here is my next (much smaller, but more spacious) project. A 1972 Apache Ramada We found it locally, and for 500 bucks it was difficult to pass on. We should have less than 1500 all in when it's done, and it will provide much more room (although not as cool) that we need to camp with. We have already painted, repaired ABS, and done most of what needs to be done to it. All the rest can be done on an as-we-have-time basis. This doesn't mean I'm out of the canned ham stuff / aluminum stuff. Just for now. If a 24 ft Spartanette *my dream trailer* jumps out in front of me I might snatch it up for the right price!

If you have a harbor freight nearby, they usually have a kit that has those in it. The vampliers are one if the most used tools IMHO. Go ahead and get a set off of amazon. They have so many uses.

I think I might have been the one that you are talking about.
I ordered the CFP Radius Plywood. It is VERY bendy, so much so that I didn't like it for this application. I don't think it has enough rigidity for a 7 ft span across the trailer. I did order it from HD, you just have to find the right person that knows how to place special orders with CFP.
I ended up finding a $$ 1/8 plywood (which I was told was CFP, but I don't think it is) at a specialty wood store about 3 hours from me. I paid 61 bucks a sheet, but in the end I was happy with it. It made the bends and looked great on 1 side, and not so bad on the other.
Based on what I saw from the 1 sheet I ordered, I WOULDN't recommend it from a trailer that is this wide. Maybe a 4ft wide or 5ft wide teardrop (I have build those too).. but for a canned ham, I just don't think it's rigid enough.

Holy crap. I haven't been on in a while and just decided to check things out for a second tonight before bed. Your build is looking AWESOME. Very clean. Really really good stuff.. you might have just inspired me to get my butt in gear (really).

Great your getting started again! youll be done with it before you know it. Did you take out the original fridge? do you remember what/where it was being held in? screws? We did not. Unfortunately it already had been removed. It had a small fridge, which we got rid of and not have the medium size one. Maybe held in from the back through the vent?

Ok... Step ONE is getting the shasta back to my house. Done.. Now to figure out where to start. .. I'm thinking windows, and then in to the finish prep for paint. Sounds simple enough right.??

So..I do lurk from time to time on here, but have had ZERO time to work on the Shasta. We DID finally sell the house AND got moved into a new one. The good news with the new house is that there is tons of room unerneath it (it's built off of the ground by about 9 feet), so I have a 800 sq ft workshop, also a ton of parking space for my other camper. Bad news is that there is that the doors are too short for the Shasta ... BUT. I think I am going to build a small covered parking pad on the side for the Shasta. Something that it can eventually live in, but will also help me have cover for the rest of the restoration/rebuild. First things first, I have to go retrieve the camper maybe this weekend or next. Still have a ton of other projects around the house that have priority though. Hope to get back into things soon.. I'm starting to get the "itch" again to work on it.. I haven't had that in a while, so that's nice! Just need to find the time now.. Not related, but a photo of my workshop.. because a post without photos is pretty boring.

That's what I used.. Be sure to post photos when you are done! I saw somewhere... Can't remember.... Someone who had done siding (thicker than this material) and it looked pretty good. Good luck! Brian Hi Brian. Do you recall what gauge aluminum you used and has it held up well for the backsplash? We're concerned about it being easy to dent once it is up. Thanks Sorry, I don't know the gague.. I will say it is a little thin... But, if that area doesn't receive a lot of "traffic, touching and such" you might be OK. We haven't even come close to finishing our camper, so I can't comment in the use of it/durability. We hit a stall a few months ago and having begun work yet...

Before I found a metal shop that would do the breaks, that is what I had in mind to try (for the siding). I thought about making a track with a roller. THe ideal is that the meal would slide underneath the track, and the roller would slide in a guide on the top. Clamp the guide down, roll across, repeat... Adding a definitive amount of weight to the roller (to keep the brakes or "rolls" even) was what I was going to do. Sort of a carriage with a slot for the meal to slide underneath. Luckily I found a meal shop that would sell me the metal, and do the breaks. I'm still going to do the backsplash idea. They sell 10 ft by 20" rolls of aluminum flashing at my local orange store that I think will work fine. That's what I used.. Be sure to post photos when you are done! I saw somewhere... Can't remember.... Someone who had done siding (thicker than this material) and it looked pretty good. Good luck! Brian

nccamper Sounds like my kind of place. If it has a pay phone, that tells me a lot about the remote location. We were originally signed up for the rally at Pine Mountain, but then "stuff" got in the way, and now we don't have a camper complete to take and baby is expected any time. That looks like it's going to be a great rally. If you get pics, please post them, I would love to see what we missed. Can someone tell me where Pine Mountain is? Its about 20 miles to little white house, which was FDR's summer home (warm springs) and also where he died... A very cool place if you like history I highly recommend it. nccamper The nearby state park is worth a visit if you have time. Also, the above mentioned is definitely a good 1/2 day trip.

Moving... ugh... I'm hoping I never have to move again until it's time to move to the cemetery. Yeah, I've always known there was going to be a day when I had to move. We have been "looking" for a while, but have just recently gotten a fire lit to get going. We have already moved a TON of crap out of our house to get it ready to be listed, that by itself was a job. BUT The good thing is now I do feel like we have a hold on things to be able to move out in a month if needed. Bad part is after we move, we have another 10x20 storage shed full of crap to sort through. AND 2 campers.

Just a quick update for those that have been following: I'm not dead! Long story short, we are selling our house and moving... SO, the Shasta is currently wrapped up like a week old baby, and stored in my buddies back 40 out in the country. I hope to get back on things soon, but realistically it will be December before I will have any time to work on it, and who knows where that will be ? At that point, it will probably (although we are in GA) be too cold to paint it... but who knows?!?

I have seen similar type stuff done in teardrop construction. It's amazing what people will do to save weight. A few oz here, a few there.. next thing you know you've save a 100 lbs!
