Newbie here! Bought an Eirba Puck with no title in CA. Went to DMV today. The trailer was declared irrepairable salvage last month! Does this indicate someone took an insurance payout? It is NOT damaged or burned. Any ideas on how to proceed? Been there and Done that. Most likely the previous owner got tired of paying yearly fees on a trailer that was just being used for storage and never used on the street. Only way to get out of paying fees is to declare the trailer irrepairable. I got a trailer like that in CA and had to jump through a few hoops to get it registered... You must get the trailer running lights and brakes working. Then you must find a licensed trailer inspection station and have the trailer inspected. Then you must take the trailer down to the DMV with the inspection papers and let the DMV inspect the VIN and measure the length. THEN they will register it. So the very first thing you should do is locate a licensed trailer inspection station. It's usually a well known mechanic somewhere near you. The DMV may also be able to help you locate one.

This poster hasn't been back to see our replies since 5PM on December 22nd... Unless she didn't log in, she hasn't been back. Was really hoping to get info from her on the title process.

OMG. This thread is a nightmare read....so I got my Lil Loafer with a clear MT title but not in the name of the guy I got it from. So prayers to Google - I found the folks on the title and had a lovely phone conversation about how they camped with their 7 kids (repeat: Li'l Loafer....riddle me that) in the 90s with it. This couple, now in their 60s, were unsure (as I was) whether I needed a bill of sale as well - I looked it up....I do not....which you all know. When I said I didn't get a bill of sale (actually, I did, from the guy who bought it from them...and the guy I bought it from....obvi they mean nothing on the title side), Larry said seriously, "No bill of sale?....it was stolen from our yard....with the signed title inside".....pause, pause, his wife: "Larry, stop it". Chuckle. Very sweet couple....very curious about the 9 of them using that thing even with tents at night.
Bottom line: Have title, will travel to DMV.
Question: It doesn't have plates....anything I need to do on that?

The rest had to sleep outside for sure. The DMV will issue new plates.

The DMV will give you new plates when you "register" it. Transfer of title moves ownership to you, registering will allow you to navigate on public roads. You don't necessarily have to register it until you are ready to pull it behind a vehicle. You do want to transfer the title into you're name as soon as possible, however.

You want to transfer it into your own name immediately before you spend any money or time on it. Thieves are smart and they are getting smarter every day. They come up with phony titles and then when you go to transfer title and register it you find that you either have a stolen trailer or a phony VIN and phony paperwork.

So after I reg'd and changed title on mine a few days ago (at a AAA where, I don't mind telling you, the bad attitude gal had no idea what she was doing and ran through it so quick....I don't know what they're supposed to check but all she did was the vin), I called my MOM up north and told her to get down and reg the one she has.... She never had because "it has CA permanent plates so I don't need to". Oh but mom....you so do. It had been THREE YEARS. Talk about a theft waiting to happen. At least she had the title and wherewithall ("That's funny you called....I'm going to look at ones to trade in for today") to take care of it. Oregon dinged her 50$ for slacking, but she would've had an annoying moment at trade in (she hasn't yet, but wants to) with a title and perm plates in Cali. "Um, ma'am you don't own this camper."

I thought I would add my experience with my 1958 Boles Aero Zenith title. I bought it with a bill of sale from a recycling yard. I took the vin to DMV had it vin checked. Not in system. They told me I had to have it vin verified which I did at the car dealership I was working at the time this was in 2016. They also said I could wait the register it until I was ready to use it. I'm pretty far along with the restore now and need to spend money on the more expensive things for it. So I decided to get it registered. Back to DMV with my verification papers. Vehicle transfer papers. Now 2018 , new rule must now be CHP vin verified. Got that done, back to DMV. CHP made a mistake on the form, Back to CHP, new form, Back to DMV. 50 miles each way. Registration fee 600. I asked why so much was told DMV charges 3 years back fee. She looks at the form says it could be registered as a CMP trailer not a CCH. Back to CHP new form, back to DMV with new form. Paid $20. got a PTI plate. Done . I can now finish the trailer with peace of mind the I own it.

Howdy folks I bought a 1955 Shasta with a title that clearly belongs with the trailer. And i am having just as much BS as I have had in the past with NO title. Rather than repeat the long and lengthy saga go to the Shasta vin and data base page to see the story I posted today Any advice appreciated Django

Hello. I'm new to the vintage camper scene and just bought a 1974 Chevy van that was converted to an RV using an old Spartan. I googled the code on the title and thought it was a legit conversion. Only after further detailed investigation I realized that the title did not reflect the rv conversion so now I have a title for a van but no title for the Spartan. I looked everywhere for a serial number with no luck. The guy I bought it from inherited the RV from his uncle but doesn't know much about it. The conversion was done probably sometime in the 70's and was professional from what I can tell. I have no desire to get the van going, I only want the Spartan. The trailer needs a complete gut but for the most part is complete. I tried uploading a picture of the rig but it's not taking. Any suggestions... Thanks.

Hello and welcome to our little piece of the internet. First off we don't gut trailers. We disassemble them and with a spartan you can do this from the inside. But for structural integrity reasons you will want to document where all the cabinets were and how they were fastened. Don't just use a sawzall and cut everything away and no sledge hammers. There is a proper way to do these things.
Now when you say you bought a van that was converted to an RV using Spartan, do you mean they are now one?

I bought our 1963 Friendship Vacationaire in Wisconsin several years ago without a title. Eventually I applied for a title based upon a VIN number I found on the tongue. The state did a search and did not turn up an owner. However, they allowed me to buy a "BONDED TITLE," which is basically a temporary title after I paid a certified bond company $100. After 5 years, if no one claims ownership, they automatically send me a clear title. It's been over 3 years now (I've owned it well over 5). Only problem is I may try to sell the camper this year and will be able to offer only a bonded title. Not sure if that will lessen my chances to sell it or lessen its value.

Hello, I’m new to the site and have 2 vintage campers with no tittles. I searched vintage camper title recovery and a Vermont DMV came up. Supposedly I can get a Vermont registration in my name. Has anyone ever used this or is it a scam. Thanks Greg

I live in Indiana. My hope is to work on a camper this winter during my slow work season. My title recovery search states that Vermont will issue a registration, in my name, for just about anything over 15 years old for $48. Then supposedly have that transferred into my home state as a title. Thanks for your reply, Greg
