It's important to do your homework - for the state you live in - before you decide to buy an untitled trailer. I don't think it's fair to state NEVER buy an untitled trailer - because it just depends. I live in Illinois and I bought my Shasta Compact from a seller in Maine - no title. Maine did not require titles but the seller had it registered and license plates for the year prior. So with a bill of sale and a letter from the Maine Secretary of State stating that they do not require titles, I was able to take it to the State of Illinois and apply for a title. No questions asked. One visit, one form, a fee, and a few weeks later the title arrived. But...I checked this out before I made the purchase.

Btw thanks for bringing my passed along ignorance to my attention. Especially the way THP has gotten lately. I mean seriously. A semi to look for a 10$ seat belt ticket and people texting lol We got a bill of sale and a title from the people we bought the trailer from but it was not titled in the peoples name we purchased it from. Another important lesson - READ THE TITLE BEFORE YOU PAY FOR THE TRAILER. The people we bought it from never titled it so that they did not have to pay sales tax. They just went camping in it with no tags or correct title. I tried to contact the owners that were on the title but they had moved out of state. My registered letter came back to me undeliverable. I took the bill of sale, old title and the form filled out for vehicles over 25 years old to the DVM. I even had a copy of the sales ad saying they had "title in hand". The DMV sent everything to their main office and WE GOT A TITLE IN OUR NAME! We had to pay the sales tax on the amount the bill of sales said. We were lucky. It took us a month to get our title.

I bought my 68 Compact from a guy around the corner with the assurance that he had the title. Welp, after 2 months of searching (so he claims), I still had no title. So, I went and saw a lawyer who said he could go to court and get me the grant for a title for it (provided a background check came back good). I paid $200 for the camper. The lawyer told me it would cost me $750 to get it titled, and that's not including reggie, state taxes, notory fees, etc. I said heck with that and gave it away. I'd later found out I could have stripped the camper of all its Shastaness and had it titled, weighed, reggied, tagged as a home built for about $250....damn! I'll never buy again without a title UNLESS it came from a state that doesn't require one. Guess I have been lucky. 3 campers and 3 titles. All the registrations say Shasta so the plate is interchangeable. Shhhhhhhh. Maybe I should go in the business of selling trailer registrations ....oops, that is unethical, immoral, and just plain wrong... Lol Sent from my Nexus 7 using proboards

I bought a trailer with no title and a bill of sale. I have successfully titled and registered it. Had the person whose name it was in at the DMV wanted to claim it, it could have gone differently. Not sure if I would take that chance again.

our Compact: We bought it from a woman who had a title signed by the previous owner. She had never titled it in her name. We had her go to her DMV and title it in her name, then sell it to us. Oddly enough, the VIN being used by Arizona was on an aluminum plate screwed to the tongue that says "Ariz. serial no. MVDxxxxxx." Someone along the way must have transferred it without knowing where to look for the VIN. New Mexico did a VIN inspection and went with the Arizona plate, as it was what was on the Arizona title, and we didn't want to rock the boat. I recently took a wire brush to the VIN plate on the inside of the tongue and found the original VIN number. One of these days when I have time to kill (and can take the trailer to DMV) I'll get them to change it to the original VIN.
our AirFlyte: titled to a woman who died. We bought it from her husband. He's currently transferring the title into his name so he can sell it to us in a way that New Mexico will accept for an out of state transfer.
Titles are fun ...

Hey Mobiltec, I wanna ask. A friend of mine took a lic plate # to CA DMV to seen who the last reg owner was of a trailer she wasn't able to find a vin #. The lady at the DMV said it hadn't been registered current for a long time. She told here it would cost her 650$ to bring it current. Well the looser guy selling it wants 500$ for the trailer and to add another 650 on top wouldn't be worth it. I thought there was a certain period of time that goes by and the DMV clears the reg money due? Do you know anything of this in CA. The looser guy says he will handle it but he is going to put it on Creigslist.

Prior to purchasing, I had called DMV gave them the VIN # and it had been out of system so long there was no title/registration. I got a $35 temp moving pass, after we purchased it took it straight to AAA and got it inspected to view the VIN and registered it in our name, starting new. Just be sure to have ALL your paperwork (visit the DMV before purchasing and get all the papers needed) especially the one from the PO signing it over to you. I wouldn't have looser guy do it. Just IMHO.

Oh, and there was no license plate, it had been stolen. So that is why everything had to be registered into the system for us.

I think it was around 15 years? Can't remember. Call DMV or Google it.

I'm from Maine and this issue concerns me as a potential seller. As per the State of Maine website, these are the only vehicles that are titled: A vehicle is required to have a title in the State of Maine if it is a 1995 model year or newer.
Titles are issued for the following types of vehicles: All Motor Vehicles Trailers over 3000 lbs (unladen weight) Motorcycles with engines 300 CC and over
I've just emailed the Title Division of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to see what they would give me to give to a potential out-of-state buyer in lieu of a title.
