Hi, I recently picked up a 1962 Shasta. It has some rot under the windows but the one area I took apart is nowhere as bad as I expected... The underside is remarkably solid considering it sat sunk in dirt since 1970.. I've been doing a lot of reading here in hopes I can fix up my camper the best I can with what I have.. Thanks for having me.. Billy.

Wow, Billy! Take care of that beauty! I think you can save most of the interior panels and ceiling. Very rare indeed. Cover the trailer or park it under a shelter, especially with Winter coming on.

That is an EPIC FIND! Wings and all! Remarkable!
There are lots of places/things to check, like the paneling below the side dinette windows, and the propane fridge...but it looks like a museum piece as is! Can't wait to follow along as you go through it, and also interested in the story of how you came to find it.

Does the fridge work on propane? If not, I hope it's an easy fix. Those are nice to have!

I had seen this camper for years in a local backyard. i had stoped h handful of times to inquire but nobody ever seemed to be home. A friend of mine moved to the next street & I told her of my interest in the camper & how the last time I went by I left a note with my phone #. So like 2 weeks later my friend texts me that there is human activity at the camper house right now so I took a ride up & low 7 behold I met with the caregiver for the elderly lady who owned the house.. She has gotten my note weeks earlier & had given it to the daughter (the woman I bought the camper from)& she said she thought she had called me already & would remind her again to call me as they had decided it was time for the camper to go.. well about 3 weeks later I get a call from the daughter & i went up to check it out & I made an offer on it, they accepted , & a week later I towed it out of the spot it had sat in for over 40 years.. I got it from the original owners grand daughter, shes in her late 50's if not early 60's .. They bought it brand new in Milford ct. & had it towed to a campground in Cannan CT (70 miles) where it was used until 1969 or 70 then it was towed back to their home in Seymour (50 miles) where I got it from in September 2013. So it's really got less than 130 miles towed on it.. I had to jack it up out of the ground & change the tires & free up the street side wheel.. I popped the hubcaps off & I'm pretty sure I was the first to have them off as well as the wheels because the paint on the lugnuts was perfect & had up to that point had never had a lugwrench on them.. so I took a picture to document this.. see below. other than age & severe dryrot the original tires (BF Goodrich Silvertown 6.70-15) showed almost NO wear. I also still have the original licence plate with the March 1970 expiration sticker on it.. So thats the story. Billy

I will take a picture of the fridge front & back in the next few days & maybe someone can tell me if it is original (I believe it is) & if it is propane powered.. Thanks. I hope you all enjoy this.. I do.

Second owner. Again, I say, epic.
What you have shown of the interior, it is immaculate. I have a '64 that is identical in all of the obvious features. You almost would not tell them apart except for the color.
It appears the upper corners of the walls are perfect, no rot anywhere that shows up. I'm sure there is a little problem areas under the side windows in front, and possibly below the rear window. The rear window has some issues, which are common to that particular one. The seals for that type window are readily available, though.
The photo above shows the refrigerator...it is a Murphy Richards Astral, propane only, no electric. It is absolutely original to the camper. The problem that commonly arises with these is the cooling unit. These ran on an ammonia-based refrigerant. Over the years, the coils would tend to decay and leak. This would be noticeable of course, indicated by any smell of ammonia around it. If this is the case, they are junk...there is no fix to them. Another common problem with them was the infiltration of insects, which could plug up the propane tubes to the pilot, etc. Some I have read about have worked after cleaning out the tubing.
I gotta say, in the condition it is in, and if it were me, I would be planning on re; placing all of the putty tape around the edges and windows over the coming winter. I would probably be making room in my living room to park it inside also!
