I have some sad but expected news. Ace, at least my local stores, are no longer carrying the tintable Oil Enamel Base. You can purchase the pre-made colors though. My very helpful local store did see that there were about 40 gallons of the base left in our "tri-state" warehouse and he recommended me calling some stores "off the beaten path" to see if they still might have the tints and equipment necessary to mix the paint. They had told me about a year ago that they were going away, nccamper stated as much in his tutorial, I guess I just waited too long. Wish me luck, and if that is the way you were going to go, better start hunting now!!

A shame. It was a tough, attractive paint you could have in the color of your choice.
I may try Napa auto paint or PPG auto on the next camper. Both run about $200-$300.

I've read a lot of paint threads and IMO the best results (other than automotive paint) has come from Ace Rust Stop Oil Enamel. I also like that they have an aluminum primer that they recommend. I wonder if the other manufacturers can say that. So I called 20 Ace Hardware stores today. One of them said the still had the equipment and tint, 3 others said maybe, call the boss tomorrow! If it's Ace paint that you want, start searching now.

I have (in hand) a gallon of Majic John Deere Yellow and I believe I'm going to get a gallon of international harvester (either Majic or rust oleum) for the top. I hope that turns out ok. I have seen some that look like a very light off white (desired), but I have seen others that look to be a very light tan.

I bought the Valspar IH white, which I had hoped was antique white but in the can is actually quite tan. I assume Majic is the same (as it replaced Valspar at TSC). Rustoleum has a great antique white, but only in rattle cans or in latex, not enamel cans. I had hoped I was getting this: But I think I got this:

I Home Depot has tintable enamel paint. I saw someone used it on a FB group that I am part of, theirs turned out looking really good. I had posted it on the forum at one point on a thread but I cant find it. It is called Valspar Anti-Rust Armor

That valspar is what my husband uses at work on the mixers and stuff (he's janitorial supervisor for a tortilla factory here in Boise). They repaint every 2 years, but the machines run close to 12 hours per day 6 days a week. This is the paint that in the 26 years he's worked there, has lasted the longest, so we are thinking about going with it if they can tint it the colors I want, if not then it'll have to be automotive paint.

I was able to order 4 quarts of the Ace oil based enamel - just picked them up today! They don't have the machine to mix them, but I spoke with Sevens paint, and they said they could mix it for me. I think there are still a few of the quarts left- have the store look up what is left at the warehouse. Just wanted to pass along the info if someone else was looking for it.

The warehouse in the MI/OH/IN area has 40 gallons, FYI I was told that they cannot use Latex tint on the oil based enamel. Don't know if that's what your Sevens store has. Many of the employees at the stores I called didn't realize there had been a different system. Congrats on your find. Heading north to have mine tinted on Friday!

Correct- definitely needs to be mixed with oil based colors. Fortunately Sevens sells almost solely oil based paints. They said they probably won't get an exact color, but can come really close. We are trying to match the original color of the stripe so if it's off slightly, it's not a huge deal. The rest of the camper will be gloss white which is still available as a pre-mix.

I think we've decided on a color for the Forester. Example: Willow Green. I'm going to paint a scrap piece of Hemet siding to see how the finish matches the factory white on our new siding. If it's perfect I'll do a traditional Z with the lower part green. If the finish looks wildly different I'll just use the green for a TBD graphic. I've decided to go with automotive paint this time around. National Coating Supplies (PPG) $261 includes 1 gallon paint plus activator and reducer. or Napa Auto Paint Paint $165.30 Hardener $36

Picked up my Paint from Ace. It was a bit tricky but I picked out a color swatch from the current Ace paint and they called up "headquarters paint people" and they translated it to the oil tints. We had to adjust it slightly after.
