I have 2 questions about the frame on compacts. SusieQ nccamper How many pieces of angle iron does your compact have? mine has 3 one in the front of the trailer, one it front of the wheel wells and one behind the wheel wells. is there supposed to be another at the back of the trailer? does yours have one back there? who are the compact owners? if anyone knows please tag them in this thread so they see it. One of the pieces of angle iron is bent behind a wheel well. Is there a way for me to straighten this out myself? are they welded on the frame or just carriage bolted? I feel like if its not welded I could just pick up a new piece and replace it easily.

You're asking about the side to side angle iron framing?
I don't recall how many pieces there were. On my 62 there were outrigger framing pieces near the rear. I had one very slightly bent and I lifted it with a jack and gave it a few knocks with a hand sledge (not to aggressive) and it bent back. I think BigBill used the same approach on a hitch...using gravity as your friend. Anything more than a slight adjustment I would reinforce by having a new piece sistered in to beef it up.

I have a piece which runs the width of the trailer in the front and back as well as the pieces in front if and behind the wheel wells. My he pieces behind the wheel wells on mine are slightly bent or twisted in the back. At first I thought they were bent, but they are exactly the same on both sides. I just left them like that.

Lola, my Westerner has 4 welded angle iron cross pieces. Here's a thumbnail illustration from the assembly process shown on Lola's Blog (larger image on blog). www.kivas.com/wp/2016/03/12/lola-the-3d-model/You can bend steel back into shape/position using force, but it may not retain its original strength. If feasible, weld on a new piece for best strength. Mark

nccamper yes the side to side a angle iron. Like Lola's photo. I wonder if the back one is missing, or maybe they just didn't have that one for my year trailer.

Yep a 1959 nccamper, that what Ross says.. I assume it since it was made in 59 it could have been released in 60, but ill never know. I also asked on a FB compact group im in. Only one response so far, they dont have it on their 63 compact... wonder if it is one of those weird shasta things where they did it on some but not others.... I went out and looked at my bent angle iron and it is just twisted like you said SusieQ but only on the one side, and i know that side was sitting on the ground, that back corner is where the most rot is. And the hole in the back corner where I can see right through.... going to need a lot of repair over there haha

So I am unsure what is supporting the back corners on my trailer. The frame makes no since to me, I will try to explain.. There are two C channels they are the tongue then continue back to right behind the wheel wells. There are two 2x4's running the length of the trailer front to back. And the 3 pieces of angle iron as I have mentioned above, one running along the front, one in front and one behind the wheels. The one behind is bolted to the end of the C channels. So I get most of the trailer is supported buy the angle iron. But the back corners... The back two 2x4s run from behind the wheel wells(on the piece of angle iron) to the back corners of the trailer(where there is nothing supporting them) So I just dont see how the back corners are supported.. if anyone has any insite that would be very helpful. side note: I have done a little research it is common for some compacts not to have that 4 piece of angle iron. You can sorta see what Im talking about from this photo I pulled off the internet. www.nationalserroscotty.org/rebuilds/62shastacompact/a46.jpgyou can see much better what im talking about in this photo off the internet junebugflying.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/img_4122.jpg

My guess... The two center pieces hold up the camper. The benches and 2x4 plus wall framing here work together with the 3x4" plywood to keep the corners in place. My guess is the later Shasta Compacts added the extra angle iron when they realized it was bouncing too much. You could always add it. In truth, there isn't much more than 100 pounds resting on the corners. Maybe not even that. (web photo)

nccamper where do you think it would be best for me to put the 2 jack stands in the back, on the two inside 2x4's or on the angle iron right behind the wheels?

I doubt placing them near the wheels will work on a Compact. The balance is too even front and back. One time my wife and I got in without jack stands and as soon as we moved behind the wheels the camper tilted back and the hitch came off the ground.
You have metal framing in the middle further back, right? If yes, I would try placing the jacks there.

Use the main front-to-back framing, two jacks in front, and two in back, as far either way as you can place them.

nccamper no metal frame towards the back, it stops after the wheel area, just the middle 2x4s span the hole distance from front to back. Which is what I have the stands on now. Ten, that is basically how I have them now, It still kind of wobbly when I walk around in there
