I thought I'd start a thread on the rebuild / restoration of our Airfloat Skipper. Owning one of these was a bit of a dream for us. There aren't very many small Airfloats to be found, and most belong in the "Show us your rot" hall of fame. Ours is no exception. I knew before the cash changed hands that this would be a complete frame up. But it's a trailer that will remain in our family long after I'm gone. I've picked up some great info on here and hope I can pass on some help as well. So here's where it starts, rotting away in southern Oregon.
And arriving in Spokane on my buddy's car hauler.

The lower siding on the trailer was all replaced with non Airfloat specific panels. I've no idea why, perhaps it was damaged in an accident. The rear end sag is substantial, just 2X2 floor construction beyond the axle shackles. That's a lot of overhang with little support.

With the skin removed and nearly all the framing being rotten we decided to build new walls. I want to maintain as much of the originality and design of the float as possible. I used an early pic from the Airfloat factory that Bob Gallagher had in his mitts. It was the inspiration for building my table jig. This pic shows Airfloats patented design for moving air through the walls. In theory it moves hot air out of the walls keeping the interior cooler, or can be closed to keep warm air within the walls when it's cold out. Does it work? I have no clue. But it's a design feature that I want to maintain.

The round windows are really great. Actually, the entire camper is really great.
The project will be a challenge but the camper is worth it.

On to building the table jig for the walls. With the lower siding replaced long ago, I had no confidence in the lower shape of the trailer. The rear was cut to match the sagging floor and the front? We needed patterns for the front and back shape to build the jig around. I located a 35' Airfloat that was buried in the woods, again in southern Oregon, and bought it for the siding for our pattern. We also made a haul on spare Airfloat parts! Wife pulling windows before crawling into the buggy, pest infested heap.
How we left it, poor thing. And yes it mostly poured rain for the entire day.

Fitting the studs was a slow but rewarding process. And cutting all those dados.... But we now have a brand spankin new pair of 52 Airfloat Skipper walls!
A lot of thinking and scribbling into this one. Next step will be building my door opening and door. More laminating.

Spectacular. How many people will ever see one Airfloat in their lifetime...let alone two! I'm so jealous on so many levels...The two Airfloats...the space to work on it, the tools to work on it, the help and support of the wife working on it! Day-yum!

My wife made a really cool discovery while pulling a mirror off the door. A pic of our float was behind it. We also learned it was once owned by a 60's artist / activist who traveled in it. We're doing some research on him and his history with the trailer. Later in the thread you'll see his mother whom gave him the trailer. And the story of how her mother ordered our Airfloat new.
