I was looking through these older threads and noticed my hubby had posted our camping pics. Five years ago, Txoil bought a two person sleeping bag. I had not been camping since I was about 8 years old and I'm almost as old as my camper. When it arrived I thought to myself, "we will NEVER use that thing." Add that I was quite obese at the time and I also thought, by some miracle, if we did go camping what would he use. Fast forward a few years, losing ALOT of weight through loss surgery and I decided to give this camping thing a try.
We broke out Txoil's old tent, bought a cheap air mattress, grabbed the 40 year old coleman stove, an ice chest with food, and a burner ring. We went to a place one step above boondocking; it had a water faucet and a port a potty.
I was hooked! That first night, we slept with the tent flaps open and I got to see the stars, shooting stars, and God's night time beauty. We also battled some feisty raccoons that decided our site was fair game.
After that we bought a ton of camping gear and I learned to make crème brulee and crawfish ettouffe on a new 90K BTU camp stove. I love camping but I don't rough it.
The last time we tent camped, it took us 4 hours to set up the tent, queen size two piece air mattress, cooking pavilion, potty tent, and on and on. It was then we decided to buy a camper. I discovered pinterest and found out about the canned hams. This was the perfect dovetail to Txoil's hobby of restoring gas pumps and cola machines.
We have only slept in our girl two nights when we drove her back from Minnesota to Louisiana so I can't wait to take her on her maiden voyage in a few weeks.
Swamp witch what a story! You are awesome to have tried and held on (and got hooked) to the idea of outdoor life. What a cool story and thanks for sharing. Im jealous as mine is about 6 months out for camping....until then...I shall continue the cots and air mattresses!!
