I don't have any tents, er, didn't... Butch Cassidy (57 Shasta 1500) came with one. The PO must have had kids. LOL.

I've noticed a few people hoping to be able to stuff as many people into a 16 foot trailer as the manuracturer says it will sleep. To be honest, I wouldn't want to sleep with more than one person in any size trailer and she better be as good looking as I am. Would you really want to try to sleep with 4 or 5 other people in a 16 foot box? That's gonna be one bad night's sleep.

Well, lets see. I don't tent camp for vacations or as us retired folks say "another trip" but I do tent camp for elk and deer hunting and I love it for those purposes. Of course the snow and rain are cause for some concerns but for the most part it is the ideal camping experience. I am over 70 and have yet to experience the aches and pains I see mentioned above. I sleep on a camping cot with a couple of zipped together sleeping bags and a layer of newspaper to keep the dampness from coming through. Mornings are great when we arise at dark thirty and make "camp coffee" and then go out on the kill (hopefully). I'm not sure about the breeze blowing through or the a/c stuff but I can say that the wood burning stove is a must as long as you keep it stoked and if you keep a pot of water on top with coffee in it, you can warm up when you have to add a stick of wood at the wee hours. The tough part is the cold seat on the "out house" with a couple of feet of snow on the ground. Now having said all of that I love my motor home and I would have a tough time getting the wife to elk camp. Have a great day.

THis is why I love my Big Agnes Big House 4 tent. We use it for all trips 2 nights or less, and on all of our multi day river trips. www.backcountry.com/images/items/large/BAG/BAG3043/YEL.jpg It's easy easy for one person to put up (3 poles) has a clear top in the rain fly so that you CAN see the stars (perseids even). Pockets all around the sides. And big doors. We sleep on cots, no rolling around on the floor--warmer than an air matress, no lumps. And there is still room to walk etc... Add the storm shelter and you're good in just about anything.

We use a 12 person tent for just the two of us and it is just about right, and I don't want to experience 5 or 6 people in a small camper.

:Doh my gosh I missed a whole week of this hilarious commentary! That's because I went TENT camping again for a few days with a few other families and friends. Okay, ok, I stayed in their trailer and my kiddos tent camped and it was glorious! We fished, had amazing campfires, no ticks and my son fed a deer (nasty) with his mouth holding a piece of lettuce...(that means we are at like a step below KOA campground where the wildlife is toooooo tame for my taste).......we have deer where we live on 58 acres here and no deer gets that close.. THAT being said, I will say that I was grateful to have a campground shower, and wear ball caps all weekend, while we cooked an amazing Mexican feast on the grill with coronas and home made margaritas at the site.... Coulda done all of that tent camping or otherwise.....I had my kids practice for Shasta camping..haha..not one of them showered in 3 days (okay they swam in the lake???), and they cut wood and my son learned to dump black and grey water..haaaa! I like the idea of air mattresses....my kids had them and one popped the first nite and the teenager was beggin to be in the trailer (friends trailer) the second nite.. Best thing of the whole trip was NO CELL SERVICE!! I must plan my trips around this from now on....

Hubby and I were just talking about this subject tonight. We're taking 2 of the adult kids and 4 grandkids, meeting up with some friends and camping this week. We're taking the trailer and tents for the kids to sleep in. When the kids were little I thought tent camping was the ONLY way to go. Now...not so much. A little comfort isn't too much to ask for, considering that I've already 'earned' my stripes by wilderness camping over the years.

Add me to the list, I was also one who thought camper people were wimps but now after having the shasta for a few years I would never go back, like txoil said all that stuff!! Now all I have to do is load the ice box with food and throw some clothes and my favorite pillow and throw the bikes or the kayaks in the back of the truck and go, so much easier.

I keep hearing that cots are the way to go....I think I will return my air mattresses (one that popped on the second use), and that Big Agnes tent looks great. I am all for the "easy tent set up", especially since my teenagers will be the one putting it up. They LOVED sleeping in the tents last weekend altho I can't wait for my Shasta to be done.

And sometimes, there's good reason to do both. That's my big tent behind my 54 Westerner up at Tecopa Hot Springs in the Mojave Desert near the south end of Death Valley. I let my friend and his dog stay in it for the weekend.
