Hey all,
Just got back from our first TCT Rally in Charleston,SC area and had a great time. Our 62 Compact did great and was toasty warm at night with a small space heater. In fact had to set it on the floor or would run us out of there. Anyway, does anyone know of a source for the correct style aluminum skin in GA or SC, maybe even North FL ? Looking to replace the lower half of the rear skin due to a big old dent suffered in a previous life so do not need that much.

There's that guy doing vendor trailers (Shasta clonish) down South. Sells skin as well. Somebody will chime in with the info...

Thanks vikx ! Think I know who you mean, the guy who sells Shasta's using other owners pictures in North Georgia ? I did get the name of a highly recommended source in Atlanta - All-Rite Mfg at : www.all-rite.com. Owners of a couple of vintage trailers I met last weekend at the TCT rally have used them and very happy with the product and service so I will see if they can help. Will post the results ! Hey KTO17,
I'm in Beaufort, SC. Got a price from All-Rite and stuff must be made out of silver, not aluminum. One piece 48 by 84 with a 6 inch brake will be $288.00 plus a crating charge of $98.00 and that is not shipped !!! I might be able to pick it up in ATL area but boy is this expensive. There is $120 included in that as the 6 inch brake is not standard so have to pay the $120.00 extra. If I pick it up and can somehow fit in my car/suv, can skip the crate charge. Hoping I can come up with a less expensive alternative or may just keep the dent !

At least this way it would show up at your front door. Also does All-Rite include seam locks of some sort? |

Here's something for you to consider.
Find a metal supply store in your local area.
Buy a piece of .040" 3003 aluminum sheet, have them shear it to your 48" by 84" size. Make sure you tell them, DO NOT SCRATCH, OR DENT IT, when they cut it! They are all like the Samsonite suitcase commercials.
Layout the pattern on the sheet with a sharpie exactly like you desire. Note, it has to be marked "on the top", because "they can only bend up" .
Take the sheet to any sheet metal, or heating and air conditioning shop and have them bend it on their 8' to 12' brake. When I hand bend metal like this I use a 1/16" piece of aluminum angle to get a nice sharp bend edge. Bring a sample of the old metal with you so they can see what you want done.
Most places would be happy to bend it for a case of beer, on a Saturday morning.
If it just a rear panel, you won't need any seam locks, so it makes the whole process even simpler.
What you want to avoid is the shipping cost, crating cost, and the "very likely" shipping damage.
I'd be surprised if the whole panel with the brake pattern cost $200. custom made to your order. |

Thanks y'all - good ideas ! I actually spoke to a shop that makes metal roofing and they thought might be able to make up a piece like I need. Going to go by with some pictures and see what they can do. I'll let you know the outcome.

Spoke to Steve at Hemet Valley RV and I can get two pieces 4 x 7 with the 6 inch run and 90 degree bend on the bottom, crated and delivered to my door for $100 less than two pieces from Al-Rite where I have to go pick them up and somehow fit in my Ford Escape SUV. Still going to go see the local metal roof guy like John recommended and I mentioned above, and see if he can make up a simple piece for me with the proper 6 inch run. If that doesn't work out will get the skins from Steve even if it does involve shipping them across the country from CA to SC !

Most of the time there is no bend at the bottom for a front or rear piece. Fully agree with Larry, do not have the bottom "pre bent".
It will give you much more flexibility doing it (or not doing it) after the top and sides are secured. I use 1/16" aluminum angle on the lower edges. Sanded and polished it looks good.
The bottom panel is the easiest panel to make on the entire trailer. It just slips into the S-Lock at the window, the only bends are the "brake pattern". Do not cut out the window hole until it's all mounted.
You will like working with the .040" thickness, as it will stay much flatter, but is still easy to cut and bend. Normal RV skin is thinner, in the .025" to .030" range.

Did find out today my local metal shop can provide .032 aluminum with the 6 inch run/break line for about half of anyone else, $219 for 2 pieces. So, going to get it here as can pick up in a pick up truck. Will not have the bottom pre-bent. Based on John's comment above, the .032 should work well. Can even save a few bucks by buying it in a mill finish and ready to paint. Thanks for everyone's help and advice.

Regards Mike Very fair price I think. What is meant by ready to be painted? This stuff comes with oil on the surface from some places. And I'm not 100% sure because I use a painter but I think all aluminum needs to be etched before priming or you must use self etching primer??? Might be a question for John. |
