Hey all, New guy here again with another question or two for you. I am going to see tomorrow and possibly buy a 1964 Zipper that has been completely restored, although not entirely as original. It is on TCT website so imagine many of you have seen it advertised for $8500. On the high side for our budget but as I always say in the old British car hobby, buy the best one you can afford versus looking for the bargain that eats you alive to complete. I have found very little about the Zipper due to its rarity but know they were only mfg for 3 years and company was an off shoot of former Shasta employees. The fact it was made in SC is appealing since I live in SC and here's one I don't have to ship across the country and pay as much for freight as the trailer costs. Owner has listed as 14 feet long and it's just shy of 8 feet tall so matches up with being a bit bigger than a Shasta Compact but think not as long as an Airflyte (sp?) . However weight is listed as 2400 pounds which seems to be very high for a 14 foot trailer. Maybe that is maximum weight or something but even the Shasta Airflyte is like 1700 or something and the Compact 1100 or so. This weight concerns me with a tow vehicle large enough to handle it versus one that can pull the Compact size. Would the weight be on a plate on the frame or somewhere to check or anyone have any info on one of these ? Also, your opinion on a Zipper in general versus a Shasta ? Just looking for advice and have learned so much from reading everything on this site over the past week. Thank goodness it is available for newbies like my wife and me ! Regards, Mike

Mike, there is not a lot of information out there about Zippers, the one on TCT is not a Compact Remember, the Shasta Compact was built in Columbia also. I honestly think 8,500 is too much. The picture below is a Zipper Compact. Danny

That Canton NC. 1500 has a pretty good starting price. Not bad form the curb. I don't know what the lay down price is at now. Spring is coming though. Thanks for othe Intell SuzyQ.. I thought that I had saw that girl somewhere. Making 2 grand after a year of camping does sound like I good deal...

This is what makes this forum so GREAT !!!! Quick responses and then SusieQ's copy of the ad from less than a year ago where the current owner bought this very same trailer in the same town where I live ! You're right, a $2000 profit in less than a year is really nice and one which I do not intend on paying as other than decorating stuff, the new owners have not really added any other value. Will obviously negotiate on that asking price if I go through with the purchase as it is a nice trailer ! Maybe I just need to wait and find that Shasta Compact we initially wanted ? Thanks to all, Mike

Thanks to SusieQ finding the original found out current owner paid $5500 versus a $6500 asking price. Also found out weight is due to heavier framing lumber and 3/4 thick birch plywood adding a lot of weight. Now just have to see what I can do on asking price as too high. Any advice ? Regards Mike

Wow! I say hone your dickering skills. And yep, I was right that 3/4" plywood would add weight, wrong in doubting it had it!!! Glad you're not going into this blind. I'm not an expert on trailers but I'm a good internet detective.

I have a 13 foot (box) Forester that weighs 2600 pounds. Shasta has a very thin wall, Forester made their walls around an inch thick with large (overkill) framing underneath. Might be worth crawling under it to take a look. Good luck!

Yep my fan is much heavier than the Shasta. I think right at 2800lbs and same length as the airflyte.

I'm questioning the lack of build photos on this trailer. It just isn't singing to me at the first price, let alone the 2nd...

I'm questioning the lack of build photos on this trailer. It just isn't singing to me at the first price, let alone the 2nd... I made a trip to Atlanta a couple of years ago to look at a restored Camper. It was absolutely beautiful and the gentleman assured me everything had been restored, after I crawled under it and saw rotten floors almost the length of the camper he got defensive and said he used new wood over the old, both inside & outside. Basically,he just fluffed up the cosmetics and didn't have a single photo of any of his work. Danny
