Over the years I’ve noticed some discussion about the best type of caulk to seal windows, doors, Fantastic Fans, and overlapping aluminum skin siding. I know I want to use 1” wide stuff. But, what is the best kind to get and where to get it? How thick? Different thicknesses for different uses?
I've used the gray sticky stuff that comes rolled in a paper backing. Is that what I'm looking for?

RV "butyl" putty tape has white crinkly paper. Pure butyl tape has slick paper. I use pure butyl in areas I suspect may be prone to leaking. (door flanges, butted metal with L trim, etc) Most of my trailers are done with 3/4 x 1/8 RV putty tape. I use 1" on the J rail, awning rail and edge trims. It needs a lot of trimming but seals the underside well. Please read here: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/11445/double-butyl
