I'll share my endeavors on our door just in case everything works out as planned. (lol) If it turns to mud.. Vikx.. please trash it. Anyhow, it's a work in progress and I am not a professional. When I got this girl a year or two ago she was "camp-able" and we have had a blast. A few things have been fixed or replaced by us but have been lost in the true scroll of "Shasta Renovation" Modified or simplified..all is well in our tribe.. Big search? Trim for these 71's. Has any other year on the Shatas' had this trim on the door? After a few notes and drops over the line, a true brother (SMILE) dropped this bottom piece to me.. (from a place called Lima..) It was a find and I stress to anyone rummaging or collecting from junk trailers to grab and carry away any of these pieces. It's was a change to the doors from the 50 plus or 60 extras, but has a bad connection to the door threshold. I'll start now;

Okay, we are all on our page... What I have here is a "trashed" lower sill and a "trashed" lower hinge. Big news here? All of the skirts (lower edge) of these girls get rotted out. Water goes down and into the "j-rail" and drip rail.. Just as time and water play, the skirt boards rot out. So this is what I am trying to do; Pull the rot out, replace it and move on.. I have a good 3 to 6 inches of solid frame from the doors base. I could rebuild the whole frame. But the frame wood is intact and will hold it's shape.. I 'll repair the base. If it fails next summer .. I'll let you know. So I tried to create template.. I want to make the doors' base greater than before.. I had some treated wood in the garage.. it was way to thick.. I had to mill it down with my router.. But, I created a paper trail first.. do it. "Draw it all out.".. I do everything on paper first.

i don't know why replacing the bottom section won't work just fine as long as the rest of the door is solid and you make a good connection.

I agree B Bill, This is what I got done Yesterday and how it looks now,, It's a snug fit.. I plan on shooting some screws in from the side, glue it up and clamp it. I am going skip the "kreg" set on this application..

I feel fortunate to escape a complete rebuild on the entire door. 80% of this is still all "glued" up and the paper baffle intact. It's a good fit.. Don't let the "Sway" look fool you, its even. I think that my new found trim will finish this out nicely.. Now for that rusted out base hinge..

Now Fix Number Two... And a Bear it will be. I know that so many here have flipped out and fixed these before. I have not, but it's do able... This is going to be a pain.. Good thing that I'm pulling the door Jamb. This doll is going to have to sleep on the work table for a few days..

Hey pathfinder, nice fix. How on earth did you finally find the bottom trim piece you needed? Haven't you been looking for that for like over a year now! That's great.

Thank you Vikx, I am reducing all of the snap shots to as small as they can be.. "Byte wise" before they go to my photo bucket.. I hope that it's not loading up the forums' capacity, but I felt like sharing a little for the suffers or others new to the sight.
Yes Soup that's the piece.. I did not ever think that I was going to find one. I thought I was going to have build one from scratch, (Laugh) and what would that look like?
Our man "Number 10" in Lima New York can through for me. Seems he came across a Astroflyte, or a similar Loflyte..I think that he ended up scrapping it for parts and If I remember correctly.. It's a 71 Now I am hitting the Compact that I scraped for parts to grab a hinge sections. I just got to figure out these Rivets. The dome top rivets that push down before popping out. I haven’t work with these before.

Yeah, he's a good dude.
It looks like the cardboard insulation inside the door was pretty dry!

Yeah brother, all of the cardboard batten was dry and that is what stop me from taking the whole skin off. The contact cement was holding up and I did not like the way the "Hinge side" of the aluminum skin was bending and flexing as I was peeping in either. I was going to loose that crisp corner in the bend, pulling out those huge staples and..and.. I just stopped where I was at.

Has anyone around here ever replaced these Rivets in the door hinge? Its a New bird in my world. I am going to try and "saw, cut and remove" the bottom part of the hinge. Replace 10 inches or so, go above the Screen Door hinge. Then replace it with a section that is in better shape. It would be a little "wordy" to write out my plan for the lap hinge, rod, ect ect..You'll have to wait on the pics. I picked up the largest "traditional" type rivet I could get my hand on, 1/8" with 1/4" grip. I think that they will fill the void. They just don't have that nice flat/dome head.. How do these Factory Rivets work.. any clue?

No worry about the photos, Pathfinder. If they are linked to Photobucket, we're good. VTT is restricted to links because we lost our old board information when too many photos were uploaded from computers...
Proboards wanted to charge us for getting the photos back on the old board. I like the format here but wouldn't be against moving if we could take our info.

It was sad to for all of the files to end up in "disarray" so to speak. I was letting my post there become my only file of record for my rebuild. Not again.. Thanks for the head up, I really like seeing the photos of other peoples work and progress without flipping to full-blogs each and every time.

At Last! The temprature is going above 40F and I can work in the Garage some on the door. Quick question before I leave for church. This Isolation strip.. It looks like just some muslin cotton with a coat of "rubbery" latex on it. Are there any 'do nots" on this? I can get some "fabrika"or some other bedding pad stuff, but I do have some salvaged duffle bag fabric as well. As long I a create a good seperation of the Aluminum from the Steel in a negative contact.. I should be good to go. What have some of you guys used?.. or have you ever done it? Feed back please.. and have a fun day.
