I took the big trailer up on friday. Hit the gravel road around 6pm. no logging trucks, and one guy slowed down for me going the other way. I met 5 others which didn't slow down. I went as slow as I could and my trailer (29ft tandem axle) got tossed around like small boat in rough seas. some years the road is better than other. This year is not. I told the in-law that there is no way I taking the little one up.
They also offered my trailer to his brother in-law for camping not to the New Zealand family for sleeping, that was the original plan. I'm pissed. I told him. NO Water NO Coooking and NO Toilet. They can use the fridge for 3 day only.
$100 insurance $75 Propane $200 Fuel (drop-off and Pick up) 32 hours of cleaning Painting the bumper and tongue and steps
Thanks for letting me vent

Larry I'm confused. I thought you hated bolers too. If I remember right SuzieQ posted a pic of one for you because you never seen one. You can all tell us if you love them. We won't judge. ha ha

Pathfinder, your funny but true. I saw tons of tiny scratches on the back fender of my car and I ask him what were you doing? He replied "taking the mud off" and I said "With what?" he said "A Rock" I didn't get mad, I just asked him not to use a rock again. I him mind he was helping me.
I'll do some posts the wedding is next month.

thanks for letting me vent. 3am is an option. The loggers do shut down in the evenings, and idiot camper take it over during to week-end. heading up on a Thursday evening and leaving on Monday night might work. Maybe the in-laws should of rented one. The gravel road is hit and miss. one week it is good (very few pot holes) and other weeks the big trailer gets tossed around.
I'll put it aside for the time being and make my decision after I take the big one up and have a look at the road. It pisses me off that they just expected me to bring it up.
thanks all

My in-law's are hosting a wedding on their land. My big trailer will be going up there soon to house people for the week-end (sleeps 8) and I'm ok with that.
The road is an Active logging road with transport trucks going 60mph on a gravel road. They will not slow down for you. I will be on it for 30 Min. I have had my truck plastered with rocks before. I do it because sometimes you just have to. Please the family.
I do not want to bring the Rainbow up. Single axle, old outriggers, you know the deal. There are tons to deep potholes which will thrash that poor trailer around. Plus all the rocks that will hit it from idiots and trucks who won't slow down. then the dust floats down from the road where I park it.
What do you think? I'm I being unreasonable? Is this the time to put my foot down and say no?

I intentionally put the toilet on the street side. This way you can run your blackwater pipe straight across to the other side for 2 reasons. you can have your valve set back so its completely under the trailer and if you really have to use your toilet without it being hooked up you can, but only twice. That pipe can hold alot. I also carry a blue portable blackwater tank.
I your thinking of this way. I can tell you the height I ended up with under the trailer. I did raise the trailer 4"

I have sort of an odd set up for my rear bed. I framed my cushions and have 1/4 ply in the large one. It spans across the hotwater heater on one side to the toilet lid on the other side for support. It's all in my blog. I hope it helps. loungebait.blogspot.ca/

I stripped it 2 summers ago and had it painted last year. I had it painted with proper aluminum primer that would work with automotive paint. still looks great. all the eyebrows can be straightened out and buffed up. Be sure to look up mobiltec videos on lifting the roof skin off. your goal is not to crack the aluminum. I reused all the rubber seals between the window and the skin. You can clean up the rubber between the window and the glass with steel wool..

your trailer looked like mine. I had a very thick rubber type coating on. It was a mess. Underneath all that paint was great skin. Don't sand the paint off, strip it off, top and the sides. for the drip rail I used stripper and a wire brush when it was off the trailer.

mobiltec, what is your opinion on the aluminum? Replace it? How expensive is it to replace? Wouldn't that be easier than all the sanding and metalwork? Since I got the trailer cheaply, I don't mind putting money into the siding, expecially since I am not replacing interior stoves, iceboxes, etc. Your thoughts? If you have more time than money, you may want to fix the aluminum sides. I strip mine with aircraft stripper. It is not as strong as the normal stripper. But the regular metal stripper will eat the aluminum. I found with many layers of paint you might have to put 4 coats of stripper on. Another option is to use a heat gun. Make sure there is nothing on the other side you don't want to start a fire. Then scrape it off with a sharp putty knife. you will have to sharpen the knife every hour of use. I stripped the roof this way For repairing the dents, you will have to anneal the aluminum first. Use a zippo lighter to blacken the paint free surface (carbon it up) then use a normal propane torch to burn off the black. Stop went the black disappears. Look up video's on it. From here you can start hammering out the dents with a hammer and a block on the otherside. There is no need to sand the side. Hope this helps Brent

thanks Vikx. I'll start out a little lower than the rails and see how it goes then go from there.
Cheers Brent

some good points since I tow the trailer with the truck (8' box) the poles will go in the back. I want to keep it as retro as possible. I know retractable poles are the best, I'm not going that route.
I guess then I should have them the same height as the awning rails?

as some of you may know I'm making my awning and poles. How much shorter should my pole height be compared to the height of the awning rail? enough to clear the trailer door when open? they are wood poles, so it will be non adjustable. the awning will be 8' out from the trailer.
thanks Brent

it did mine a bit different. I have the normal 3 cushions, 2 skinny and 1 wide. But the wide one have 1/4" ply screwed in the wood frame. the wood frames are 1x2"s laying flat on the bottom of the cushion. I did it that way so there is support when sleeping. the ends of big cushion sits over the toilet enclosure and the hotwater enclosure. many pics in blog. loungebait.blogspot.ca/
