I know most vents come through the roof but I'd prefer to avoid more holes than absolutely necessary. Any reason not to vent out the side? I'm thinking about something just under the J rail with a downward facing scoop(for loss of the correct term)
What size pipe is usually used? Is abs plastic ok or?

That is what I did on our Shasta Starflyte rebuild. I ran (I believe ) a 1 1/4" PVC pipe for a vent tube for the sink drain and for the converted black water tank (converted into a grey tank). I ran both through the side of the camper wall. The sink vent was placed just below the countertop bottom edge and the grey water tank was placed about 2' above the tank. I saw no reason to get either vent close to the top roof line of the camper. That being said, if I were running a vent line for a black water tank, you better believe that I would run it as high as I could get it.
To cover the ends of the vent pipes on the outside, I installed screen mesh (to keep bugs for entering) and a 4" round stainless steel vent cover plate over each one.

I only had a gray water tank vent I needed to run so I ran it up the side wall and used the old fresh water tank filler as my opening. I really didn't need much so I was able to use 1/2 pex and plastic hose. If I had black water then maybe I would do something different.

That helps, I will have both gray and black tanks, shower and sinks to the gray, toilet only to the black.
Strictly for aesthetics I'd like to have the vents at the same level and since the black should go high, ill put the gray vent high as well.
As far as connection to the tanks, are you connected directly to the top of the gray tank or teed into a drain pipe leading to it? Just wondering if theres options or optimal placement.

I tied to the tank at or near the top.
