the 1966 Lo-Liner has been done for 2 weeks. We went to the VCT rally in Petaluma last weekend and on a local camp out 50 miles or so from home this weekend. Everything was great, until some guy rear ended us at a red light! He was stopped behind us, I think when the center turn lane started going, so did he. It's more messed up that the photos tell, the street side frameing is broken and pushed in, which means the whole back has to come back apart. The luggage door that I just reskined is toast. Is there someplace that custom builds these? Anyone have one from a parts trailer? I have to try to find a shop to give me an estimate and see how bad his insurance is going to try to hose me.
Yesterday, pre crash Tore the lower piece here
Pre crash, yest

That's a shame. I hope it all works out for you.
Stand your ground with the insurance. This has been a season in hell for us with them, but I won.

WELL DRAT. This makes me sick.
It's possible the frame of the cargo door can be straightened and and the door itself re-skinned/rebuilt.
I'm guessing 1500 in labor to take the back apart, fix and put it back together. John Palmer has done insurance work and may have some good ideas.
PM me for his email address or contact him thru Repairing Yesterdays's Trailers.
NOTE: Always better to fix it yourself. It will be done to your specs the right way.

Heartbreaking.
This raises a good question, where to get an honest appraisal based on the time it takes to do the work? Materials might cost a few hundred but the time to do the repairs right and repaint is the real expense.

What a shame. Makes one wonder, would the third brake light like on newer vehicles made the driver aware of your trailer stopped?

What a shame. Makes one wonder, would the third brake light like on newer vehicles made the driver aware of your trailer stopped? If I had something that gorgeous ahead of me, I'd be paying MORE, not less attention. Sometimes I think a bank of blinking lights across the rear wouldn make a difference. Sad, sad, sad..

I don't think extra lights would help helpin this case. He was actually stopped behind us and then decided to go when the cars in the center turn lane did. Nevermind that we were still in front of him.I talked to a trailer shop in town that said he will give us an estimate, we will see how it comes out. The worst thing is. I drive through that intersection every day in my fully insured truck with a receiver sticking out the back. He couldn't have hit that instead?

Has anyone delt with The Metal Company or a similar place? They say they make custom cargo doors in any size. Not only is mine all bent, the corner welds are broken. www.themetalcompany.com/node/9

PM me for his email address or contact him thru Repairing Yesterdays's Trailers. NOTE: Always better to fix it yourself. It will be done to your specs the right way. I managed to get an estimate, that was a frustrating experience in itself, 3 hours and 70 miles of driving. I talked to place 5 miles from me on Monday, he said to call Thurs. to get an appt on Friday. I called at 8:00 and they said to call at 1:00. Called at 1:00 and they said he would call me. Never did. I called another place and the owner seemed very helpful and on the ball. He said to come in at 8:00 today. The only guy there was a grunt that couldn't give me an estimate and had a list of lame excuses as to why I should go elsewhere, they don't do paint, it would be outside, I'd have to leave it a long time, etc, etc. he said go to the body shop that they use, he was sure they could fix it. I knew better, but went anyway. They were super helpful and gave me an estimate for the paint, but wouldn't get into the structure. Another place said that it would be 3-4 months just to get an estimate. Finally I went to an old school place, one guy probably 80 years old. I really felt bad about wasting his time, he spent an hour calling places, flipping through catalogs and writing the estimate. He would be willing to do the repair and wasn't intimidated like the younger guy. His estimate was $1902 including paint, so I'll forward it to the insurance company and see what they say. The paint shop estimate alone was $720.

This highlights a potential problem with getting insurance companies to pay a claim on a 50 year old camper.
Keep us posted.

A Hagarty representative was at the rally in Petaluma band said that they were going to start covering vintage trailers in Jan 2018. I allready have two cars insured with them, so I was going to wait and use them. The trailer hasn't been hit in 50 years so surely I could skate by for 6 months. Of course this happened on the second trips outt. I will probably try to find a policy somewhere in the meantime.
