Most Compacts had 3/4" wall cavities. I haven't done a compact ceiling, but am guessing the rafters are a little thicker. I know the front and rear below the windows is also 3/4".
If you can dig into wood with your fingernail or knife, it needs to be replaced. The knife would go in very easily and the wood will look shredded... Sometimes, a person can cut the bad rafter ends and marry a couple of supports on either side to re-connect the wall. Just depends on what the damage is...

Cedar tends to crack out when driving screws. I've tried it and wasn't super happy. I use regular framing lumber for wall studs and sometimes rafters. Most is 3/4". If you have thicker walls, you can rip studs to size or have the lumber store do it for you.
