Aloha All! Tonight, my Handy-Andy-Dandy-Man (a restorer of 1940-1959 Ford trucks) asked if I knew where to find new skin for my in-work 1964 Shasta Airflyte (I think). My first thought was "sure I do... I go ask this great forum I found." So here I am... Asking. Instead of spending a ton of time trying to repair some places on the front skin we'd like to replace it. We're in Virginia if that's of any help. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
p.s. If I can figure out how to upload pics to this site I'll do so. Always better with a picture... And glass of wine!

Thank you for the quick response; always appreciated. I found their name after further mining of this excellent forum. Sounds like they're the folks to talk to but, admittedly, I'm hoping for someone a wee bit closer if possible. If not then I have no hesitation going through them. Thanks again.

Don't forget that I have lots of videos showing Hemet Valley RV making the metal and more of me installing it.
Did you talk to Steve Loomis and get your metal ordered?

Aloha, I am in NC and we just started a restore on a 1968 shasta 1500. She will need all new skin. Did you find anything closer to us here on the east coast? Jody

I don't live on the East Coast, as a matter of fact I'm in Washington state. However, in restoring my 61 Shasta I utilized a local (50 miles) sheetmetal fabrication shop. I took in a sample of what I wanted to get an estimate. When the deal was done, I took all of the pieces from my trailer to them to use as a pattern. I was extremely happy with the results. I didn't need a roof panel but for all the rest it came to just over $600. If I were in your position, I would let my fingers do the walking in the yellow pages looking for sheetmetal shops. However, if that don't work, Hemet is without a doubt your best choice. I did talk to a couple of RV repair shops about acquiring skin for custom trailers and my take away was, "way too expensive".

So this sheet metal shop made new skin based on your sample pattern, did I understand that correctly? Was it aluminum?

I'm in S.E. Ohio. I found a place called Polar, a tanker truck repair shop right here in town, who uses the same guage aluminum as the skin on my Scotty. It's on a 48" seemingly endless roll and he can do the pittsburgh seam to whatever length he cuts. He doesn't have a break though. Low and behold, a local gutter guy can. Our local HVAC guy only has an 8' break but turned me on to several others within an hour or so of here. So do some research before having to ship new skins across the country. The aluminum at Polar has a film on one side that you peel off after installed, and it's so bright and polished you 'have to wear shades'... makes me want to redo the Scotty into a silver-side. If you're reasonably close to Marietta Ohio I'll be glad to send their info.

Jodybitzz The trailer in your avatar doesn't look that bad are you planning on replacing all of the skin? None of my business just being nosey.
Never mind I just got a look at your pictures in another post and what wasn't bad probably is now. You will have a beautiful 1500 when you finish if you reskin it. I pulled the skin off my 1500 and ironed out most of the dents but I am cheap and didn't wish to spend the coin for new as I figure as it gets used it will just get more bangs in it. Are you going to put the interior back original or update it to suit you. I am making major changes to the interior of my 68 1500, we are designing it to make the wife and I as comfortable as possible in that small space.

Aloha, have you found anything closer to you? I found this place but I haven't checked with them to see how well they could meet our needs. I'm not to that point just yet. www.tri-stateservicegroup.com/I was planning on painting over the dings and dents and filling in the buck shot holes. But of course, the more work and money I put into the inside, the more I wish the outside could look "new", too.

So this sheet metal shop made new skin based on your sample pattern, did I understand that correctly? Was it aluminum? The simple answer is yes and yes. I see you have lots of suggestions for where to look so I would follow up on those. One thing to be aware of is the thickness of the replacement aluminum. Be sure that they can match what you have. When I had mine fabricated they did an outstanding job, however, they made it slightly thicker than the original. This was not a show stopper but it did make bending it over the side metal a bit of a chore. My original was 28 gauge and the replacement was 26. Also, if you are going to paint it you might want to consider having it made with the preprimed material if possible. If you are going to go with an aluminum look, the product from the tanker place would probably be the way to go. Also, take a look at mobiltec's site for cutting metal. When you have the skin fabricated it is a lot better to cut your own openings as sometimes in the rebuild as well as the fabrication process, dimensions can change and sometimes not in your favor. Mobiltec has some excellent video's on most all phases of the restoration and well worth taking a look at before getting too far along. It is kind of like the old saying "measure twice, cut once" but in this case "review twice, save time and money". Good luck.

Like I said, once we got into her there was really nothing we could save. I am going to do some updates, such as make a larger bed. The one in there was 48inches, not a true full size. So I will extend the bed framing to 53 inches. In order to do this we will shift the cabinets and counter tops down 6 inches. So that also means the door will be moved down. I am making the dinette area smaller, cutting those benches down to about 24 inches in length. I have the original oven and stove that will be put back in. I also will be putting in a fridge and microwave as well as a roof top AC unit. When I bought her the interior was painted which was very cute. However, after seeing many pictures and some campers in person, I'm going to go with stained birch (or something comparable). Do you have a link to your pictures?

My pictures of what I started with are on here some where I haven't added to them for a while. I have all most all of the frame work done now I have to build everything for the inside except for the kitchen sink cabinet and that I only have to modify. I am going with a built in A/C unit, a microwave, and a toaster oven. There will be no propane as I plan to do very little camping off grid. My unit will be total electric with a gas drive generator for use if I am off grid. I will have two gouchos one across the front and one from the door to the rear on the curb side. I will have a port-a-potti enclosed in a cabinet on the left side to the rear of the sink. I will have cupboards across the rear above the window and high down the curb side from rear to door. These cupboards will add strength to the trailer plus make up for the closet I am removing from the floor plan. Then I will have drop down tables in four locations accessible from goucho seating positions. This unit is designed for max comfort for my wife and I. I know all the arguments about resale but that is of no concern to me on this trailer because I plan on keeping it for a long time. If I get wife out of hospital and rehab, able to walk again, I hope to have it ready to take to Florida in April 2014, we want to go there for our local high schools baseball spring training. Hope this book made sense.
