Howdy fellow tin can lovers,
I have owned several Airstreams over the years in various states.Restored a Tradewind and got sideways fast. Currently own a 1965 Caravel that is in decent original condition that I have no interest in getting "sideways" in. i have traveled with it quite a bit through out the South West and North West.
I was bitten by the canned ham bug a few years back as I love the warm wood interiors, simplicity and ease of towing. I purchased a 1955 Shasta from the original owner who was 92 at the time. Shasta is in very good original shape but with the standard water damage around front windows and roof vent. Has a propane fridge that the owner added as an option when purchased. Eventually I will remove the skin and do a proper renovation when time permits.
I live in the mountains of central Az and had seen the Aljoa parked behind a cabin that was used infrequently when driving by to a job i was working on. Kept meaning to stop and leave a note on the door but the place looked as though no one had been there for along time.. As I drove by one day a fellow was cleaning up the yard and had moved the trailer out front so I stopped to chat. Friendly guy who was a distant family member in charge of cleaning up and selling the property for a relative who had passed. He had been offered $400 for the trailer from a scrap metal buyer. I did not even need to look inside to say SOLD if you will wait till I go get some cash. Sadly no title that he knew of.Got the cash . He wrote out a bill of sale and a deal was made. He did say he would check with other family members regarding a title as the trailer had been sitting there for 20 years that he knew of. Got a phone call a few weeks later saying sorry no title. No big deal here in Az as i have applied for abandoned title or bonded title before.
The Aljoa is in great shape with water damage only around the rear window and lower rear area corners by the bed. Roof vent and all other areas are sound. Brown naugahyde dinette seats look to have been redone many years ago or could be original. Stove, ice box, counter tops and old marmoleum (SP?) are in fantastic shape. Has original venetian blinds on front and side windows. One small side window and the door window have been shot with a BB gun and there are 1/2 dozen BB dents in the street side aluminum. I even got the original keys for the door and storage area.Mattress is decent but I will replace with a modern one. Also has the brackets and a canvas bunk that goes with it. The paint is original but very faded. Aljoa is barley visible on the front and back. The cool design is still visible on the side. I plan on removing the rear skin to address rot and replace the rear interior birch. Not sure what I will do on the exterior at this time. I love this little guy and I am so glad i was able to save this cute little trailer form the crusher!!
Now for my question. I am assuming the Aljoa is a 1954 or 1955. I have located numbers stamped on the drivers side of the tongue. They are 51361699, If any one can tell me what year the Aljoa is I will appreciate having the correct year prior to going in to the Motor Vehicle License place to get my title squared away.
