The whole idea of this delaminating Chinese plywood makes me SICK. I bought some fancy bendy ply from Windsor Plywood, assuming it was from Canada. There were suspicious areas where the seams lifted after shellac. So far, so good, but with all the hours spent, very disconcerting. MADDENING.

It certainly does seem most prudent to apply finish to any new plywood before installing it. Just for kicks, I contacted Taraca Pacific through their web site contact page and mentioned the delamination issues being seen here. I'm curious what their response will be to these indefensible quality problems, but I'm guessing it will be the usual blah blah...low cost...blah blah.... Buyer beware for everything these days.

Update to Boulter Plywood in Somerville, MA prices: It's now $49/sheet for bending birch. (Am I right that this is what we're looking for? If not, "American birch" is $45/sheet.)

It is not repairable either.

Mobiltec, I thought the same thing.
So when I was looking for birch I called almost every source on this list and pressed them about whether their birch was domestic or imported. Every one under $35 a piece was imported. A couple of cheap Sources on this list refused to answer.
With that said, if that was all I could get, I'd have to buy it.

ok I went to the lumber place and the have some kind of birch plywood from Russia, it is very light in color, nice but I think its too light for what I have, they also have 1/8 luan which to me looked close to what I have. the luan was 14 bucks a 4x8 sheet and the wood from Russia was 22 bucks for a 5x5 sheet..
hope this helps

It will be VERY DARK... But it will work if you are going to paint. 5x5 is no good for anything. Well maybe cabinet work but that's all.

Just called the Berkeley, Ca store today to check stock. They have about 20 sheets on hand, of 1/4" Ash for $65 per sheet.

I know some people use oak to replace the ash panels, where are you all getting it from? and prices? I am also seeing a bunch of different kinds of oak, red oak, white oak, some labeled as just oak… which do you get?
