With the VIN being C 75**, I'm guessing late 56 or early 57. Both our 57s are later... Hope Ross arrives soon! Haven't heard of the Special before. I will say, Butch and Sundance seemed to have been ordered with options. Butch has brakes, Sundance doesn't. The interiors are almost identical, aside from color. (blue/yellow) The light is not in the normal place for a 57 1500. I believe the 1400 to be the smaller of the two if memory serves. Two of my 54 trailers (not Shastas) had the gas light in the same location. The tail lights on our 57s: I don't think the 2nd set of tail lights are original. Hub caps were usual on Shastas, yes.

Great information!! The second set of tail lights are just reflectors. My tail light setup looks the same as the 57 pictured.
It has a little bit of rot but nothing crazy.
As for the value. I live on socal. I want to restore the trailer and might just do that. But I'm also trying to buy a house so if someone sees the gem they always have been looking for and the price is right then I'll make that decision when the time comes. As the days go on I have become more intrigued and attached though. Would really like to find out what the "special" is all about.

The biggest difference I have noticed is the lack of front side windows.

It was made in van Nuys ca. And sold it bakersfield where it spent it's entire life. Original black plate. Vin # c75**. Made in late 56 and sold in 57.Very happy with camper so far. Just so interested in why it's a special and I have no definite answer.
And yes the plate is still on the side from where it was sold.
Thanks for looking

"Rare" and "worth" are hard to discern. It's basically what the traffic will bear:
This little trailer has some pretty significant water stains and needs repair. In other words, not camp ready. A rebuilder searching for a 50s ham would be happy to find it, as all the parts and pieces are present. Most do not pay top dollar simply because a build is very, very expensive.
As said above, clean it up, shine and wax, remove the carpet pieces, make sure everything works. It's amazing what a good scrubbing will do...
Being a Special doesn't increase the value much, if at all. It's a very cool little trailer, we all like it. If it's Special to you, that's what counts. Have fun with it.

I think the 50s Shasta has come to represent the dream canned ham for many new enthusiasts. The shape and design accents, like wings on some models, are beautiful. But for the sake of those who will read this thread in months to come, there is a reason so many of us have at least one Shasta...they made a LOT of them. It was the cheap, mass market camper of its day. More of a Chevy than a Ferrari. So as VIKX said above, the brand itself is not "rare". In fact, in comparison to most brands it's easy to find.
With that said, I still love them. They're all beautiful, and this one is in an unmolested condition. That makes it special.
I would hold onto this and restore it.

I called on an ad for a "Very Rare" 59 Shasta once. I told the guy it wasn't rare at all. He asked what made me think so? I answered, "well I just found one didn't I?"...

Keep in mind that some of our trailers were made earlier than the title says. A PO could have made an error or the DMV... WHAT !!! the DMV make mistake, never just ask them. I have an Early 60s Deville that came with a title saying it is a Scamp. Scamps are fiberglass egg type trailers. My Deville IS a Deville and it's not made of fiberglass LOL... It will cost a few bucks but I will have to change it back to a Deville on the title. The Title also says it's a 73? LOL. So they got it all screwed up somewhere along the line.

None of the yellow on black plates are original to the trailers unless the trailer is a 63 or newer. That's when California switched from Black on Yellow to Yellow on Black. Everyone had to get new plates then and very few people kept the old black on yellows with their trailers because of cost of keeping the old plates. So the plate really means nothing in your quest to find out what year it is. Sorry. For anyone reading this, we are talking about California plates only.
I really think this trailer is a 54 or older. The equipment inside is what tells me that. But I could be wrong. I was wrong once before... Where the heck is Ross when we need him? LOL...

I had a 69 Scamp that is Aluminum. Well it WAS... donated to the cause around here... Looked similar to an Aristocrat retro Loliner, but a little bigger. Possibly made in Canada.

Did it have the fin in the back like the Cardinals? I dont want to hijack this thread Vikx so I will post a couple of pics in another thread for you to look at. Maybe my trailer is a Canuk? I know nothing about Canadian Trailers eh?
