Rory the metal covers over the skin where the frame comes through is just fine. Many of the older trailers had horse shoe shaped covers because thy cut the metal a quarter inch away from the frame to make installation easy and quick. It's looking great. Good job that the windows all lined up.

Got a few things done over the past day and 1/2. Been battling a nasty head/chest cold so didn't spend a lot of time in the shop with Dot. I cleaned up the curb side/rear window (it was gooped up bad). Putty knife, box cutter, steel brush, light steel wool, and Blue Magic brought it back to a tolerable level. I was gonna paint the wings with the color that was on it when we got the compact. Trailer boss cornered me yesterday and said she wanted them silver... Uggh.. she's mean and ornery that one. OK, I learned how to disassemble the wings. They have one rivet that holds the frame together on one corner.. Drill/pop that out, scrape 40+ years of silicone off, and you're there. Citristripped the old paint on the wing pieces, cleaned everything up and reassembled....didn't come out too bad (they don't look new, but not a bad for a fledgeling trailer fixer upper). Oh, worked on sealing the holes from the "extra" set of tail lights Dot had on her; still needs some sanding/smoothing but the old holes will be no more. Thanks for looking.

The window and wings turned out fantastic! I hadn't noticed that the rood looks like the old 6" break aluminum. Is that how they came???

Thanks hamlet. Not sure if this is the way they've always came. I'm pretty new at this game.

After taking an outdoor break and working on some other stuff, had to get back to Dot (she was calling me). Got the DR side bunk window prepped and put back in, and, actually did the same for the main rear window. All seemed to come out fine; don't think they will leak . Used small, 1 3/4" pieces of butyl putty in the skin valleys as Vik recommended in addition to the full length attached to all four side of the windows before they went in. Dang it, couldn't find my other boxes of new screws so had to use some of the old (you can see the obvious difference especially on the rear window between the old and new). I'll find em and replace the old dingy ones with new. Gonna have to get some more for sure as I still have a few more windows, and, all the J rail to install! Thanks for looking. RJ

Looks great. Glad you are back at Dot!
You might use a tiny dab of Gutter Seal when replacing the old screws for insurance. I rarely use GS on screws unless I replace one. Removing them takes a bit of putty...

Wings look great! You got your "M" back? Ha, I think so . I've been waiting for two weeks for the proflex seam sealer to come in the mail (backordered). It "should" be in this week so I can finish the vent install and seal the associated horizontal seam. Once that's done, I can get rolling on the J rails. The guy that painted my old car is gonna paint Dot and has told me I can put the parts back on (windows, jrails, hatches, vents, lights, etc.) and he'll tape off everything prior to paint. Oh, I've gotta do the interior before paint, and, I'm seriously considering putting new springs on the old gal. Still a long road to go but my "M" is back to an acceptable level I think.

New springs are not a bad idea at all. The old ones can break at the shackle. This has actually happened to me. There is a place called Mac's Springs in the Inland Valley who makes them custom for a little over $200 a pair and they include all the hardware including greaseable bushings. A very good deal. The new springs you can buy at RV supplies probably will not fit unless you move the spring perches.

OK, the proflex "finally" came in today so I started prepping the vent install job. Cleaned up the vent opening and the seam that runs side to side. The vent seam is not bad, but not the best so I touched the opening with a bit of gutter seal after I cleaned everything up. I also used some magic blue tape under the edges of the vent opening. I think it's a bit of insurance for the old metal around the opening (umm, I wonder where I got that tip from.... vikx.. . After the seam dries, I'll use three coats of the proflex. Once that dries, I'll install the vent with butyl putty and the lap sealant. Making a bit of progress this weekend I think. The table saw push sticks you see were used to lift the roof up enough so I could carefully slide the tape under and stick it. Very stick stuff . Once vent and seam are done, I'll be able to start cleaning J rails and the edges they'll be re-installed on. Thanks for looking.
