I just got my camper yesterday, I'm so excited and nervous to start working on it, it needs a lot more work than I anticipated, but I am up for the challenge. I will post some photos of the interior soon. i have been looking for a camper for about 3 years now, on and off. But I got really serious about it this summer, I went back and forth talking to a friend of the deceased owner, the camper had been sitting in his friends back yard since 1968 untitled and unregistered, the camper was given to him for his kids to play in, in the yard. Considering how long it sat there, it doesn't have too much water damage, but defiantly plenty, haha. I was lucky enough to have the man deliver it to me from 4 hours away on a flatbed, because one of the wheels are locked up. Advise on the locked wheel anyone?? Here are some photos that the seller sent me and of course none of these photos show the damaged areas. This is her in my backyard

Welcome to VTT mel. You scored a good first camper in that 1961 Shasta Compact.

That compact is looking pretty nice. I really am going to have to get my hands on one of those. I like smaller trailers myself. Welcome to the board mel...

Yeah, ash interior, but quite a bit of it needs to be replaced. So I'm not really sure what to do because there is no matching the ash.

If you're up for a suggestion...
Don't try to match it. Decide what you can save. Is it just the paneling that needs replacing? If you can just sand the other parts and refinish them, do that and keep the light color. Then find birch with the most grain you can find, finish it in a darker finish - the golden tone should be enough of a contrast, and celebrate the difference in the wood tones. One of the most beautiful small homes we've ever seen had a mixture of old growth cedar and black walnut. The floors were a light bamboo. It was stunning. It'd look really cool, although not entirely original, in a Compact.
Just some ramblings from another Compact owner.

Welcome to VTT Mel.
Nice Compact. I see you mention that it was given to the friends Dad for the kids to use many years ago and has been sitting with no title or registration. Make sure you can get a clean title or registration from your local DMV so you can use it on the streets before putting a lot of time and money into it. Unless you plan on just parking it on private property. Just a thought. Enjoy! Nice find!! Soup

Thanks for the advise Hamlet, I won't know how much needs to be replaced until I I take a few panels off, there is water damage under the front window and the back window, so I'm going to start there. I also thought I could maybe paint some of it and keep some of the wood. example maybe keep the shelfs, closet and kitchen wood and paint just the walls? Keep the ideas coming Soup, yeah I'm not going to put any money into it until it is legal, I know that I took a risk buying it. Luckily I live in Michigan where the process should go smoothly. Key word should lol. I would not have bought this if I lived in most other states. I will keep you posted on that.

mel, it appears you plan on working on the Compact for your own use. I would suggest once you get the Title settled, you have, as she sits, a very collectible Shasta Compact...the minute you paint any portion of the interior, you will never be able to realize the maximum resale potential possible, should you decide to sell it in the future. I am not implying there is anything "wrong" with painting some interior stuff and leaving other stuff original wood, and many people probably do that. Just pointing out You have an "unmolested" original right now and they are getting harder to find.

Vintagebruce, I would love to see it stay original, but with the condition of it I think that is impossible, I just went and took more pics of the interior, showing the damaged areas. The photos posted above don't show any of the damage. Also the pink on the camper is not original either. I think it was originally all white.
SusieQ, Yes that is my camper, I contacted the seller about the ad very quickly, I'm guessing I was the first person to contact him. We were emailing back and forth about the camper for over a month. He is a busy man so there was a lot of waiting.. I'm so impatient, I sat around thinking about it forever it felt like. At one point I thought maybe this person was playing a sad trick on me. But I know I'm just so impatient I had to keep telling myself that this guy is honest and very nice he wouldn't do that, and he was.

Wow, Mel! You got a good deal! If you want to bring it back to near original, you can do it. I've almost finished my 62 and it was in a sad state. Take a look at Nccamper's 62. He's done a great job with the interior. Replacing the paneling with birch is really the easy part. You'll find a lot of rotted framing and skirting.
The "no title" made me hesitate, plus the amount of junk that was in it. But if you change your mind and don't want to keep it, let me know!

SusieQ, I forgot to answer your question about the stuff in it. He left some stuff in it but not as much as the photo showed. I a teal/blue pan and dutch oven, they are heavy like cast iron but coated with something. Not sure how to explain them, but I love them. Everything in it was vintage. There was this old coffee/tea dispenser pot thing, it was really neat, a big circle. Some cool aluminum/tin/stainless?? lunch containers like personal size, also a stacked one for transporting food, some other random none interesting stuff, a hand saw, telescope, double stacked heavy duty stock pot, vintage monopoly(water damaged), a really weird oxygen thing, colman lantern. I think that is about it. I think some of the items will be in the photos I'm going to post soon, when my daughter is napping. Oh yeah and I was bummed he threw the cushions out even after I asked him to save them. He said they smelled really bad and mice had gotten into them. How to I look at Nccamper's 62?

Oh, I hope you have the pieces to the Monopoly game. My son and I were just discussing that. The iron is not longer made, it was replaced with a cat this year. Too bad about the cushions. I hope you have the photos. Not even many photos around of the original vintage material. My 65 has its original cushions but they are not very interesting.
