So we have planned for months to make a rally in October at Fentress, Tx...reserved the site etc, etc. However there is a slight problem. Sometime this summer, a leak occurred in Tallulah Belle, and the fiberglas insulation above the front window became wet. Which caused the birch above the window to wrinkle and disintegrate, and also caused the birch below the window to stain, as well as the curbside dinette panel. Since I work offshore on a 14/14 schedule, my time to work on the trailer is limited. Having said all this, we started on an emergency facelift last Thurdsay. Removed entire front end, dinette wall and roof (in order to install new one piece roof. Also replacing a broken glass pane in the streetyside dinette window frame and fix up some random issues in order to get her 'rally ready'. Holy Smokes! Since Thursday we have built an entirely new front end, insulated and reinstalled paneling, electric, propane and cabinets... it has been a month's worth of work condensed into 5 days. Really amazing how much rot had occurred in the NEW WOOD I had installed just last September. We have no idea whence the leak happened, but it laid waste to everything it touched. Pics will follow but I am just too tired right now to do the Photobucket thing. I pray this does NOT happen to any of you!

Leaks happen. Sounds like a J Rail leak. I suppose it could be a seam... I really like using Gutter Seal to top off the putty tape under the J Rail. That really finishes off the seal. Nothing is getting through.

Friday, sept 19. Front end removed, starting on replacing. Different view of Tallulah Belle sans front end. Saturday Sept 20. New dinette wall and new front lower panel cut, framed shellac'ed and in place. Saturday Sept 20 front view. Monday morning, Sept 22 (Our ten year anniversary, ironically enough) New front curve in place and cabinet reinstalled, gas and electric connected. Monday evening, front skins on and entrance door being reinstalled. Today I cut and installed a new roof, sprayed etch primer and will spray white base coat this evening. Lots of work for five days!

Did you have any trouble with the paint cracking when you messed with the skin edges?

Got the new roof primered and painted, front edge trim 1n place, rock guard re-installed. Now when I come in from offshore I will have 48 hrs to complete all the little tasks before time to head for the rally. Are we crazy for this obsession of ours? I have lost 10 lbs. this week with all the heat and humidity.

Did you have any trouble with the paint cracking when you messed with the skin edges? Not cracking, but discoloration from butyl putty and weather. I will touch up the noticible areas to at least make them blend in. This camper is for us to use, so I am not worried about normal wear and tear. After all isn't that what winters are for...to repair the boo-boos on our vintage beauties?

Nothing is getting through. Excuse my momentary threadjack. When looking at a used trailer, is there a way to tell if the gutter seal was used over the J rail vs. silicone? As a newbie searching to buy a vintage trailer how would I tell the difference to see if it was done right? I read threads like this and I continue to be amazed at the craft of trailer restoration. Enjoy the rally! Rod

I'm so sorry to hear about the leak. As Gilda Radner said, "it's always something." I an't imagine how much work you've done. Wow.

Enjoy the rally! Rod Never really had to check. You can't tell the gutter seal is there. It just looks like a REALLY good putty job or it's painted and you see nothing till you go to pull the J rail although I don't see why you would want to if it had gutter seal. If it's Silicone it will be hard to remove without "Re-Mov" silicone remover. I learned about the gutter seal from Vikx....
