Did you have any trouble with the paint cracking when you messed with the skin edges? Not cracking, but discoloration from butyl putty and weather. I will touch up the noticible areas to at least make them blend in. This camper is for us to use, so I am not worried about normal wear and tear. After all isn't that what winters are for...to repair the boo-boos on our vintage beauties?
Spot on...

Removed entire front end, dinette wall and roof (in order to install new one piece roof. Hi,
Noobie here. I am looking for some clarification.
When you mentioned replacing with a new one piece roof, does that mean it was a piece of plywood over spars? is that any different than what was there already or was it already a one piece roof?
thank you,
Rod

He's talking about the metal skin. My 59 Shasta had 3 seams in the metal roof, which had never leaked, but I decided I didn't want to take the chance that I had opened up one in the process of lifting off the roof so I could re-insulate. Happy I did, although it was THE trickiest part of the whole restore. I didn't lose ten pounds like txoil (in which case I'd be replacing the roof a few more times), but I did lose a bunch of brain cells and my composure more than once!!! Very pleased with the end result, though, and now have peace of mind knowing THAT won't be a source of leakage.

Hey, I just realized that if we all lost weight doing this like txoil did, we could start a new fad called "The Canned Ham Diet"!

Teachindad...when we bought the trailer, it had a one piece metal roof that the PO had installed. During the restoration process the 12 foot by 7 foot roof was blown off the trailer several times by sudden rain storms, and in the process became stretched and the edges cracked I had purchased a new roll of roofing last spring with the intent of replacing the roof, but due to medical and family issues I was not able to do all this work until now. Having a one piece metal roof makes it easier to seal and waterproof, and that is always a winner, per these vintage tyrailers!
